Well after staring at both of these with the domes on trying to figure out if code 3 made 2 different styles, I pulled the domes off to find this:





They have matching domes and were both on the tailboard of the same engine, the one on the right appears to have been cut down from a full size as you can see the remains of a sawing job. Confused

Code 3 probably did not make any short XL with the side by side rotator.
I have only seen early short SD's with the side by side rotator.

It is probably as you say, a cut down full sized XL.

I think you are correct. I know of a truck that has a set on the back, I'll check to see if the bulbs are mounted back to back or angled like the ones in the picture.

Could be a field mod. the lamp holders are interchangeable.
