Alright, I try not to be negative, but bear with me for one minute.....

To the guys with their bourkes melted.... 'Ok', you've seen fire.....horray!!!! Good for you. I'm gonna say prolly in a training burn, but perhaps the real thing....I dont know, but now remove them and put some new ones on that are effective..... Now what happens if you need eye protection..... oh ok, you have other eye protection??? Then take the melted bourkes off and stop showing off- Look at any REAL jake from Boston, NYC or LA, whatever and guarenteed you will never see melted pieces of equipment.....

(Stepping off my soapbox).

I have to agree with Joe about the Bourkes. If they are smoked and hazy it is one thing, but melted like that. Not a good idea.

Joe - Not to start an argument or anything, BUT.. I have been to Rescue 1 and Rescue 3 in the city (as I'm sure at least a few others have) and there are lids on the gear racks with melted bourkes, melted ID shields, helmets that are the stickers are blackened or melted.. Now I agree with you about replacing the bourkes, but if the owner of the helmets wants them that way, then so be it.. Personally, if my bourkes ever melted be it from training or the real thing I would change them out. My two cents, again Joe, no disrespect intended

Joe,

No need to feel bad about voicing your opinions...that particular picture was taken after a training session...I just wanted to see how hot it needed to be to really mess them up since they were already about halfway shot from the fire I spoke of that occurred about a month prior. Turns out at about 1180F the bourkes do a pretty good inpersonation of a shrinky-dink. Wow, showing my age there! Anywho, those were promptly removed immediately after the aforementioned training session and replaced with a new set.

Stay safe!

- Pete

I dont know about you guys but I rarely rely on my bourkes to save my eyes. If I need eye protection I carry goggles. But you are absolutely right you need to be prepared for anyting in our line of duty. Good call Joe and good job on relpacing the melted bourkes as well.

My bourkes were burned up in a rockin apartment fire. They were replaced later that day after I visited the hospital (@*$& happens). I certainly don't use them as primary eye protection, thats what we are given safety glasses and facepieces for. Also, why would you wear a $500 helmet in a training burn?

I agree... I have bourkes on my helmet, but they are for quick, spure of the moment protection. I have saftey glasses that I use primarily in my pockets.

Lol, I'll never forget the Galls catalogue that came out like 2 or 3 years ago with the guy wearing his helmet and the melted bourkes on them... I couldnt help but think, boy what an idiot, he'll never live that one down.

You could go to a store that sells reflective tape and do it yourself. It would be easier and cheapier.

Ok finally got around to taking pictures of my helmets.

First one is a helmet that all rookies have to wear for their 1 year probation period. Even though I am a transfer from another department I am still considered a rookie. Sad

Next is my grass fire helmet.

Finally here is the helmet I will get after one year and get my second vote on the department.

My new helmet and shiny new shield, we'll see how long that lasts. I also have a metro for MVA's.

Not to be a trouble maker here, but why in the world would you keep those melted Borx shields on there?? I guess eye protection is not a big concern, not that they are the best protection but they do help.
