Why red light in the front ?
You are probably the only country in Western Europe allowing red in front. Blue is primary emergency color everywhere else.

What is the history behind this red light?

It could be a inferred emitter for nighttime surveillance.

I believe it is used to signal in your rear view mirror you have to stop / pull over....

Red light: stopping light. It means that if the police wants to stop someone from behind, they put both blue and red lights on, but if they are just on a emergency run they use blue only. So blue is the primary emergency color, and vehicles of some authorities like customs, border guard and police may have these stopping lights to the front. I think some Spanish units use red lights too, i have seen them somewhere on a catalogue maybe. Estonia uses them, too. To the rear a hand held sign is used like by the germans. On vans the light is mounted on the bonnet, like seen in the picture, and in newer vans they are on the dash on the drivers side, as seen in the other picture. Sedans have them mounted on the light bar and unmarked cars have them with a blue strobe or halogen light behind the grille. I saw a cool combination where it was behind the VW tag on an unmarked van.
Here a sedan:

As I was thinking yesterday about red stopping lights, I realized that quite a few countries in europe use nowadays a single red to the front to stop vehicles: At least Finland, Sweden, Germany, Estonia and Spain use them. I personally think that it is a better solution than a LED sign, because those signs to the front usually are just for STOP POLICE only, same as the red light and the light is probably even better visible especially at undercover vehicles when the led display is mounted on the sun visor and sun is shining on it.

Hello,

I've seen these vehicles as ambulances as well. Ambulance Mobile(?)
I personally like the integrated sleek look of the roof line. We had a few sprinter ambulances around here, which has a similar lightbar construction.

Who produces the actual electronics in the bar? Probably Hänsch Germany?

Best regards, Ruud-Peter

Don't think they are Hansch, the roof housings come from Sarco I believe - and they are Fed Sig dealers......

The ambulances that i have seen in the states with the smooth integrated lights lights like that are Demers, made in Canada. They are usually on Ford chassis. I personally have never worked in one, but i have only ever heard good things. They handle very well, and you don't get the whistle/hum from an external lightbar. Besides that, a Van police unit is a rare sight here in the US, minus maybe paddy wagons, or DOT units that the NYSP have...

Vans as police patrol cars are very common in the EU.

In the Netherlands, they are used for all kinds of jobs, ranging from surveillance (2 persons in vehicle), to arresting and transporting prisoners to the police station. VW T4/T5 and Mercedes Viano are often used.

Normal patrol cars are smaller overhere than in the States. We don't have any CVPI, Impalas or Chargers Sad . Normally just basic small euro saloons like Ford Focus/Mondeo, VW Golf/Touran.

There are a few exeptions to the rule, which is for instance the police along the coastline (i.e. Nissan Patrol), in the Hague, where armoured version of the Mercedes G-Class and VW Toureg are used or Schiphol airport (military police have high powered armoured Toyota Landcruiser VX)

It's not a steady red, but flashing red.

In short: flashing blue lights in your rearview mirror mean: "We're in a hurry! Get out of the way!"

Flashing blue with flashing red: "We want YOU! Pull over and stop!" Smile

And not pulling over for a van... well, you might lose your tires to a stinger before you see a "real" police car. We have more vans than cars. (But you would get to see the cage in the back... from the inside.) Razz

The cages are really small. I had the pleasure to sit in one (no, I wasn't arrested, it was at an exposition Very Happy ) and with my 6'6" I had to bend my neck quite hard to fit in there. I wouldn't like to sit there while the car is moving... If I remember correct they didn't have seat belts back there? RJ, do you know if more such new vans are planned to be distributed in the near future or are those just trial vehicles?

I also like those built-in lights. Our ambulances (designed by Visser, Netherlands) are equipped with those - looks better than a lightbar mounted on top...

AMAZING to see those Dutch ambulances in Austrian service!
Those were bought secondhand I guess? Our typical striping on emergency vehicles is speading slowly throughout Europe Very Happy
