Hey guys/gals,

Long time reader, first time poster. I'm an air traffic controller in Grand Forks, ND working for Uncle Sam so at least I have something in commong with some of you guys. I actually went to tech school for a few semesters looking to get my law enforcement degree, but decided to pursue aviation.

For some reason I always had a fasination with all the flashing lights associated with emergency vehicles. The Federal Signal Vision lightbar really got me hooked. Just the ability to program numerous different patterns that probably had more computer power than early super computers and probably the space shuttle was pretty sweet. I'm still looking for one by the way (hint, hint).

Anyways I'm starting to ramble. So hello to everybody, glad to see this forum growing everyday. Later!

Joe

Howdy!

Well at least in ATC you get to play with all the flashing runway/approach/taxiway/hold-short & beacon lights. Cool

Now on those strips without ATC:
There aren't many things more sexy than a few TX clicks on the CTAF and watching a whole airfield come to bright, shining life...

Just south of our main IFR runway approach lies a 4-lane highway and when we crank the approach lights to 'step 3', you see the brake lights come on when they get blinded. Powerful stuff.

Since the University of North Dakota has their flight operations at the airport, some trouble making students have been known to come out late at night with their aviation band radios and play with the lights. They really do light up the night sky though. Pretty hefty electric bill for sure.

I know LED's have made their way into taxiway lights, just not here yet. Having airport ops change lightbulbs on the runway is the last thing we want when we are up to our neck in airplanes!

You a pilot by chance?

The only flight following I do is within my 5 mile ring of the class delta! haha Beyond that, I don't get paid.

Glad to see some aviation guys on here Smile

Welcome. I'm a student pilot in wa. We have something similar @ KSEA. the ALS for the newly designated 16C (yay new 3rd runway!) Goes right over a state highway. Good to see more aviation types around.

Welcome to the board! I'll say you've got a pretty unique profession compared to the rest of the board in general, which is cool!

That's pretty funny that the college students have to come and click on the field lights for fun, I guess there are worse things they could be doing!

No, I'm just a backseater, but we operate in anything from Class-B to G airspace, including many MOAs, usually under ABQ Center. I get to work with some cool pilots who let me play a little, and teach me alot though. Some old friends from the army and air force also did ATC and I find it fascinating.

Hello from a few miles up I-29! Yea, I guess there's not much reason to make the venture up here other than for some Sioux hockey games. Enjoy the weather while it lasts huh?! Probably snow next week for all we know. Take er' easy...
