I have a van that I work out of the back. I wanted to buy some lights that I can use to light up the work area in between the doors. I was thinking about buying 2 Whelen TIR3's to do this. A, would this be enough light to light up a work area inbetween the swing out van doors. B, how could I hook these up to turn on when the doors are opened. Thanks,

as far as getting them to light up when the door opens, I'd suggest running a wire off the switch/wire that turns on the dome light when the door opens. Run it to a relay and use the relay to turn on the lights you want . . .

Seems like you're spending an awful lot of money for SAE certification, etc. for a simple steady-burn light. Plus, they're going to be quite directional. TIR3s are not the solution to *every* problem.

Personally, I use these:

I've got one normal and one filtered red, along with a three-way switch to select either red or red/white (red to prevent night blindness). They are mounted to the structural members of my topper (Knapheide Knap Kap on a 2005 F-350SD shortbed). With both switched on, it's like daylight back there.

Personally, I wouldn't tap into the factory wiring. Use a pin switch, the switch on the fixture itself, or a separate toggle to enable the lighting.
