Hey everybody

This is my first post here. I am in Toronto, Canada. I am currently trying to decide what to do with my life and I am thinking about something in EMS or security or something - I am not sure what yet. Hoping to have all that figured out soon though.

Anyhow, the posts on this board seem interesting to me, so I thought I would join and find out what its all about.

I probably won't post a lot right now Embarassed until I get more familiar with the board.

thanks

Welcome to the boards. Don't worry about not knowing what you want to do. Kurt Vonnegut in his famous commencement address to the graduating class at MIT in 1997 said \"Some of the most interesting people I know didn't know at 20 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don't.\"

As long as you have a plan to at least learn as much as you can, its definately fine to not know what you're gonna do. I have lots of friends that didn't know what the heck they wanted to do, and just started schooling until they found something they were passionate about. Those people make the most dedicated workers too!

Good luck, welcome too!

Greetings, Michelle!

Don't worry about it too much; I, too, am in a similar situation. As a current student, I have yet to decide upon a profession to uptake. Medicine and law have both interested me... Shocked

...however, no matter what I do, firefighting will always be a part of my life. Cool

Pursue all options and who knows, you just may find the one you're looking for. Wink

Thanks Ben.

I'm at that point (26) where I'm having trouble deciding exactly what I am passionate about. For me, I will think of something I like to do and think it would be a great career move and then I'll do it and find out it's not for me. I feel that is kinda wasted time.

I have decided to fill my summer with lots of fun outdoor activities. I love to play and watch all sports. I'm also going to do some soul searching and then focus on returning to school part-time or full time in the fall. What I might do is just try a whole bunch of different things. Hopefully something will interest me enough to make a career of it (if not a career, than a hobby). I also want to do some volunteer work somewhere, but haven't figured that out yet either....SIGH....

How does one really know what their calling is? Perhaps I should do one of those tests that tell you what the best job for you is, according to your personality.

Has anyone ever done this? Did it work?

Thanks m

Those tests don't really work. I think mine said I should be a teacher or a scientist. Then again I'm probably the last person to give career advice, as I spent 7 years in the fire service only to change my mind and begin a career in Law Enforcement. Fortunately I did it at still a young age. I don't feel like I wasted those 7 years at all... in fact it has helped me prepare to deal with the people I'll be dealing with, just in a different setting.

Volunteering is a great way to get started in your career, especially if you decide a Fire or EMS career. Otherwise you can always do \"ride-alongs\" with an agency to see what they do.

Good luck in your quest. There are people here from all sorts of different fields, so I'm sure there will be many people to help out if you have questions. And also a belated welcome to the board. Smile

Its that point in your life when...well....mine was at or around 11 or 12 years old...My grandmothers house caught fire in the dead of winter. I watched as the volunteers ran into and out of the house carrying furniture, pictures, things that you could not replace. While at the same time they where batteling the blazes...it was cold and dark. I remember their faces...the same faces I now work with..only they where younger then...the house was a loss...but the memories saved within where priceless.

Thanks for sharing. You mention how they removed furniture, pics etc. I hope that all the people got out in time and that they were okay.

Here's a stupid question. What do you mean by \"ride along\"? Embarassed

Michelle, welcome to elightbars. I am sure you will enjoy your stay here, as there is a great group of people here. The aptitude tests I took while still in high school told me to become a police officer, which is what my dream is. I recommend trying a free one, as there are a bunch online.

Good luck

Hi BigWil

Thanks. I guess the aptitude tests work for some and not others, from what I've read on here.

Can you recommend any online tests?

Monster.ca has one, and there are definitely a bunch more. Just google aptitude test, and take a few different ones. That would be the best way of getting a fair answer.

Michigan totally rocks!! Absolutely love it there. Unfortunately don't get over as much as I'd like, considering how close it is to Toronto (and considering that I have friends in Windsor).

Was a little perturbed about the state of downtown Detroit (like a ghost town) the last time I was there tho, but I've heard it is improving and that housing in the downtown area is super cheap right now.

Improving? Laughing Laughing Deghetto as I call it ranks in the top 3 in crime and 2 in Violent Crime.

Everything is cheap because people are either being shot or they are moving before they get shot.
