Hello All,

Have been searching for the best led Beacon for this fleet of Tow Trucks we will equip soon. So far I see the Whelen L-31, and the Fed Sig UltraStar near to what we need, a Very Bright and service free light source, Now, I havent seen any of those flashing by myself to have a conclusion and a definitive winner, So I am asking a few hints, tips or references between these two Beacons.

I see the difference in price between the Whelen L-31 and the Fed Sig UltraStar is respectable, But if the Whelen is much more reliable and powerfull in brightness We could go with the L-31s.

These trucks are for highway help, accidented vehicles, removing crash in emergency etc, so a reliable powerfull light is needed, Why not going to a full 9M lightbar you may ask? well, the shiping cost to bring them here have shown to be as expensive as if we would order the double in Light Beacons, The Whelen SD360 or Whelen 2526 are also some options but The Leds are now the most wanted beacause the trucks stay in the highway sometimes for hours before leaving the scene. So a combination of Strobe and led or Only L-31s and tir-3s could be fine, Oh! and they want them all Red, dont ask me why Shocked , yes, I would go amber of course. Cool
Any good ideas are welcome.

Thanks, Very Happy

Alfredo.

Alfredo,

Whelen has reduced L31 prices very significantly (promotion going on right now). I also hear 2006 prices will be at or near the current promotional price.

You should be aware that L31 beacons meet California Title XIII (amber). What this means to you is these beacons are more than twice as intense as SAE Class 1 intensity beacons. No other manufacturer of LED beacons can offer you this.

Also, due to the nature of LED technology, RED LED is the most intense. This means RED L31's will be very seriously intense, my friend!

No other way to experience this than buying one to try for yourself!

Thanks John,

Yes I saw the price reduction recently, Also as I was trying to get my best views from the screen, and I can see the L-31 is something like 4, 400 Series Led heads together to form the Beacon? seems at least like that.

Anyway I believe we could go with them, the only problem is that the trucks are 24VDC, Can Whelen deliver 24VDC on these Lights, or may be it is just better to get the 12VDC from the Truck directly, (since there are 2 12VDC Bats) and this way we could use them in some others Service Vehicles...

Thanks.

Alfredo,

The L31 & L32 Beacons are available from Whelen in a 24v configuration:

L31HAF4 - L31 SUPER-LED FLAT MOUNT, AMBER, 24V
L31HRF4 - L31 SUPER-LED FLAT MOUNT, RED, 24V

My Fire Dept. just ordered new twin engines and they are going to have Whelen L31 Super-LED Beacons in Red installed on the top in the rear. They look very good. We sold many of these units.

Thanks Kirk,

Well, I have to ask it... Do you think the Whelen L-31 would be brighter than the Fed Sig, UltraStar?? I have to ask because I cant buy them both just to know which is more poweful, So I am counting on people who have seen them both working and try to make my choice...

Its giving me a hard time, Fed Sig looks really nice in price and features, but Whelen L-31 looks very good too, tought a bit more price... Ummm, I Dont know.... Any Help Please? Confused

Thanks.

I've only experienced the Whelen Super-LED Beacons. I haven't even seen pictures of the Federal Signal LED Beacons. THe Whelen's are nice though.

I think some pictures might help me see how Led Beacons could look/perform in Tow Trucks, So I wonder if anyone here uses them and could be so kind of posting some pics of his trucks using the leds Beacons I am looking forward to see installed...

Thanks.

Alfredo.
