Where in the original post did it say he had to take the lights off? Officer stopped him, asked to see the lights on, inspected his permit and sent him on his way. |

then he wanted me to put my lights in the trunk, HELL, i have a remote dashmiser that the wires run all through the headliner, i would have been on the side of the road for an hour! so we compromised on putting up the slimlighter and removing the lenses on my dashmiser and putting them in the trunk! |

Wow...comparing cops and firefighters is silly. Why do we do it? We're adrenaline junkies, people that want to help other people and who knows what else. Guess what though guys, we complement each other, why not compliment each other too?
As far as education requirements for cops, I agree...many departments are willing to hire 19 year old high school grads to fill the ranks. My department does this and it's a MISTAKE. I am continually astounded at the MORONS that I work with. Cops that think they're better than someone else. Cops that bend and twist or plain make up the law to suit their needs. Cops that take the job too personally. Cops that have no RIGHT to wear the badge. And guess what? I work with some GREAT cops too. Cops that always do the right thing. Cops that are caring, concerned and empathetic. Cops that go home at night proud of what they've done that day. I happen to have two college degrees and used to be a teacher and a youth leader at a church. Does that make me a better cop? No, it makes me a DIFFERENT cop. I'm not a bad ass, I don't know how to fight very well and I can't find crack in the back of a bathing suit. On the other hand I know how to deal with the community, talk to children and teenagers, handle grieving and upset people and make the public feel that the cops really ARE there to help them.
As far as police not knowing the law, that's always been and always will be a problem. Make sure that YOU know the law to protect yourself and have the statute numbers to back it up. Don't be an ass, but politely share with the officer the correct information and if he gives you a hard time simply ask for a supervisor to respond on scene. In most agencies they're required to when requested. 1212, I think you handled your situation very well...shame your brother felt pride was more important than truth. And your question is a good one...but I'd rather get shot than burned.
Are there uneducated cops that are a disgrace? Sure. Are there uneducated cops that do a great job? Sure. Same goes with educated ones...it's what's between the ears, not what's in a frame on the wall.
