|
|
So I understand that there are pickup truck restrictions on most all of the NY state parkways. I HAD BEEN planning on driving up to Westchester in a 2500 silverado pickup with regular out of state passenger car-only registration. Best guess, the truck weighs 7000 lbs and it is a private / non-commercial vehicle.
I know that I will likely have to drive on the Bronx River and Taconic Pkways & NJ Turnpike among others. My question is, what are the current rules, and how strict are the police there about the pickup restrictions? I'm wondering if I just need to find a different vehicle to drive up there. Thanks. |

So you're saying that from your experiences neither the Taconic or Bronx River would be a problem? I understand CMV restrictions but it seems silly to me that anyone would prohibit regular pickup trucks from an entire highway. I dunno, I guess there's some reason for it. |

| I believe that you are \"restricted\" from doing so if you have commercial plates. You won't have any problems. |

I know commercial vehicles are prohibited on the Taconic State Parkway.
State Police are very strict on the enforcement of it also.AFAIK most if not all Pick Up Trucks in NY have commercial plates on them, thus the problem with driving on the Taconic.
DOT is lackluster on the State Parkways as far as improvements go,so commercial trucks face a quandry of potential issues.Raised curbs, narrow lanes, low bridge clearances and crubed medians in some areas.
here is what I found online in regards to State Park ways
https://www.nysdot.gov/programs/repository/Parkways%20brochure%20text.txt
Hope this helps.

Parkways and turnpikes are 2 totally different animals. Turnpikes are commercial friendly, ESPECIALLY the NJ Turnpike (you'll see what I mean once you get on it. ) As for your pickup, if the truck is registered without commercial plates, has no commercial lettering on it and is in a personal (not business) name, you will be OK on any parkway. Restrictions are strictly for commercial vehicles and, as noted earlier, most personal pick ups in NY fall into this category. Now, I'm not saying that you won't get stopped and probably given the once over, but a ticket (if by some freak chance you are issued one) will not hold up in court if your vehicle meets the above criteria. |

| It seems kind of weird that you could get a ticket for driving a pickup with commercial plates on a state parkway like the Taconic. Like wkr518 said, basically all pickups in NY have commercial plates. What about vehicles like Suburbans or Excursions that don't require commercial plates? |

I got a ticket on the Taconic near Dutchess Co driving a Ford Ranger with commercial plates in 2003 coming back from NYC.Trooper informed me of the no commercial vehicles law.
This was the eye opener for me.I also know of 2 other people who recevied tickets by NYSP for driving on TSP in thier pick ups with commercial plates on them.
So maybe it was only certain sections of the Taconic. |

NJ should be fine on any road as long as the vehicle is registered as a private passenger vehicle, as long as it's not a secondary road that has weight restrictions.
The Turnpike and 287 will definitely be fine... the Parkway is too, but I'd advise avoiding it just because around the Oranges the lanes are damn narrow, even for a SRW F250. |
