Next month I'm planning on flying to Buffalo, renting a car, then driving to Kitchener, ON. I have tried to research this but I'm getting conflicting answers, so here it goes.

1. Do I need a passport to get in/out of Canada by car? Some sites say yes, some sites say a Driver's license and birth certificate are ok.

2. If I need a passport, how long will it take to get one?

Any other advice you could give me would be appreciated also.

I was in Canada twice over the past month, and was able to get in and out using a driver's license and birth certificate. I believe that as of June 1st,
2009, you will need a passport.

See the Canada and US travel web sites here:

As for passport wait times, one of the people that I work with just got hers (application by post office) within two weeks.

Wolfman is correct. I went to Montreal and some of the people traveling with us only had their license and a notarized copy of their birth certificate and they were fine, however we did get detained but I'm assuming it was because 6 college kids in a car in suspicious or something?

If you plan on spending the night over there, you should be prepared to answer some questions when reentering the US. I mean, more than if you just go over for the day.

Ok. I'll be staying for 9 days. Think I'll get grilled?

American citizens do NOT require a passport to enter Canada, but it is a good idea to have one with you. If not a DL or birth certificate is acceptable. I can't imagine why US Customs would give you any problems returning home. Just explain to them why you were absent from the US for 9 days.

Don't flash those! Only if the officer asks what you do for a living, then show. Don't just do that off the cuff, it pisses everyone off. OH, and DON'T carry your firearm into Canada. That would be a good way to get yourself canned real quick.
