|
|
Hey all, my department was just told that we are going to be getting either an '03 or '04 CVPI that was used as a patrol unit by the PD to convert to our command/captain's car. being known as \"the light guy\" on the squad i've been asked to help spec out the vehicle. the first thing i was told was that it is NOT to be \"whacked out\" but should provide adequate warning for city style traffic. here's the list of necessary requirements that i was given.
Everything to be LED:
Lightbar (full)
HAW LEDs (Lt. likes the idea of the Whelen HALOs but from what i've seen they're not offered for our model years)
Intersection lights (Lt. likes the 10-75 bracket so Ryan, expect a request for a bid)
Grille lights
Rear Deck lights
Siren/Speaker
100% Volunteer department so funding is limited. let's see what you can come up with. |

Ok, let's break this down a bit and go from there:
**Lightbar (full)**
If you go for new, I'd do a Whelen Justice. Effective and affordable. Or, hold out for some used bars.
**HAW LEDs** (...Whelen HALOs...not offered for our model...)
Sound Off Signal LEDs in the front corners and Whelen Vertex's in red in the taillights.
**Intersection lights (Lt. likes the 10-75 bracket)**
10-75 bracket w/LEDs should do you pretty good. Just keep in mind about some lights meant to disperse primarily horizontally rather than vertically. Some lights it makes a difference, some it doesn't. Here's another thing to consider, is mirror beams. You can find use mirrorbeams for CVPIs on fleabay pretty regularly now, and they're affordable.
**Grille lights**
You'll have plenty of folks chiming in here about not using linear style lights behind the grille, and I concur. Whelen TIR6/TIR3s, Axixtech LX4s, Sound Off XP63s, Sound Off Predetor IIs are all good choices, though I think the Predetor II's might be a bit more expensive. I'm not gonna go into Code 3 or FedSig, as they're too pricy for my taste.
**Rear Deck lights **
You've got so many options. Honestly, I'd say not to do this if you're gonna do a full size/decked out lightbar. It'll be overkill. Use that money to buy the HAW LEDs. Or, if you don't do a lightbar, then go hog wild on the deck.
**Siren/Speaker**
Unitrol...that's the only way to go. As far as a speaker, whatever you can get that fits. Personally, speakers don't matter all that much to me. |

| sounds good. for the most part. as far as used equipment, we can't really do that because regulations require that we get a minimum of 3 bids per order so it would all be coming from dealers and such. also for deck lights, we may be going with a liberty with depopulated rear (Corner, light, empty, empty, empty, empty, light, corner) so that's where they come in. also my department has a thing for Whelen sirens so that's probably where that will come from. |

I like what grfd711 was suggesting...
I think the Justice would be a great lightbar to go with (Good output for a good price). As far as the rest goes, I'd say TIR6's in the Grille, LIN3's or 4's on a 10-75 intersection bracket, Sound-Off Led Haw's up front in the corners and Vertex's in the back. For rear deck warning, how about the CHMSL Talon for the CVPI? And to top it all off, the siren/switchbox of your choosing. |

economy liberty or justice
HLF
2 LAWS in Front Corner and 2 in Brake
2 500 series for the grill
Rear LP bracket with lin3's
is it gona come with a pushbumper? if yes, put lin lights on that; if not use 10-75 bracket
jotto desk console
SA315P speaker(s)
295SL siren & light controller, or just the 295 siren and have installer use a few havis rocker switches on a blank face plate to control lighting (might save a lil $ here)
i do like the talon rear deck brake light, so i'd get it if budget permits; if not, the lin3's, HAWs and the lightbar will b more than sufficient. consider a tlf in the rear instead of the HAWs if budget is still tight
good luck |

I really dont' like that idea. Why waste such a visible space by not putting lights in the rear of the bar? On a truck, ambulance, SUV, engine, I can understand, as th eback of the bar is often hidden by the vehicle itself depending on angle of view, but on a Crown Vic? Makes no sense to me. If it's a money thing, put the LEDs in the bar and leave 'em off the deck. When you are stopped on an accident in the middle of the road, you're gonna want the people coming up behind to see the car as soon as possible, from as far away as possible. The higher the lights, the better. If they don't see your car until they get up over the hill enough to see the deck lights, it may be too late, depending on the scenario. I don't really know enough to give you good ideas over all, but I relaly don't like the idea of the empty rear of the bar on a vic . . . ok, 'nough ranting . . . |

| Mick, i agree with you 100% but with that being said, i'm low-man on the totem pole and was only tasked with this because it was decided that if necessary they could strip my POV to equip the new vehicle. |

| if you guys are going for a low cost whelen bar why not get one that has the 4 dioes pre head instead of the full 6? the SO here did the 4 led modules to the rear, and 6's to the front. I would also agree that deck lights are important, if the trunk is up, and I bet it will be if your using it for command the lightbar will be blocked, I have even added 2 par 36 strobes to the inside of the trunk lid, if you mount the strobe p/s in the trunk, its easy to wire the trigger wire to a switch on the lid so the lights can be switched on and off when working out of the trunk |

I believe that only applies to Apparatus. Not anything like this.
Also if it is coming from your local PD, are they keeping the lightbar and everything with it? |
