These are nice units. Very sturdy, if a bit big. What I don't like that there is only one flash pattern - quad flash. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's a bit too fast for my liking. There is no steady burn either, so no using an external flasher.

I haven't seen this in person yet... not sure about the brightness.

These sirens are usually only 35 watts.

Is there any relatively simple way to purchase stuff from overseas and have it shipped to the States?

The rechargeable beacon was a long time coming. If companies would start doing completely self contained lights, minibars and such, I predict they could make a killing. Battery technology today should be able to easily support this.

I'd far rather have the ability to just stick a self contained unit wherever I needed it than have 97 flash patterns I'll never use.

I got mine at Pep Boys. So far it has worked perfectly. The only draw back I've really found that a switch box would be better for is that with a switch box, you normally have lighted switches that tell you when your lights are on. With the remote, you don't have that. I installed some small single bulb LED's in the back window area that I could see with my rear view mirror.

The only potential issue I can see with this theft - if you're using a magnetic mount, self contained beacon, it would be that much easier for a thief to walk off with your light. However, I do applaud the ingenuity.

Has anyone bought from emergencyequipmenshop.co.uk?

I don't rate their customer service very high... once they heard I was outside the UK, they wouldn't even reply to my emails. Not even a polite \"sorry, we don't ship overseas\" or something...

I'm skeptical about these LED beacons though... basically, there's only one LED at a time as a lighting footprint. Is that going to be bright enough?

Not sure which model you have seen, as our's doesn't flash 'one LED at a time'... they all flash in a very powerful quad flash... and they are 3 watt LED's inside !

I'm sure they do... however, there's 8 of them, spread out 45 degrees from each other? So it's still only one LED, max, that you're getting head on from any one angle. Even if it is 3 watts, I don't think that's enough, in sunlight. It may be sufficient in the dark.

Wrong again Laughing there is 10 not 8. and they have passed the R65 approval which means ( amongst other points ) they are as bright as a halogen beacon. I can tell you from 50 metres behind the light you see at least 3 LED's.... !

True. For having seen them on unmarked police units in Madrid, I confirm, they are blinding.

Besides, I don't see your point RJ... A halogen one, even rotating at 150 fpm, will flash straight into the eye of an observer only at a perfect 90 angle. Confused

Still, why isn't this stuff available in the States, particularly products from Federal, which I thought was a U.S. based company. I know that there are different standards mandated in different countries, but if we can import everything from cars to sex toys, I don't see why it should be that difficult.

Because the FS products are actually Federal Signal Vama (FS European distributor) designed and built in Spain exclusively for the european market, Woodway is the UK Whelen distributor and so their products (not that they actually make anything other than the opti-link (which is a very good controller, better than high current switchboxes)) are aimed only at the UK market.

Yes, but compare the size of the halogen rotator to a single LED...

That siren/speaker system is quite nice for off-road vehicles. It's a self contained amp inside the speaker. I know they use them for on-road vehicles (motorcycles) in the European market, but they're only 35 watts so they're not suitable for the NA market.

We've sold them to various agencies including ski patrol agencies (for use on snowmobiles), etc. I don't think we've had a failure yet. They're completely weatherproof and easy to use. Euro-tones, though, but that's ok too.
