I know we have a lot of truck guys on here, so I have a guestion. I have an '89 F-350 with a big block 460. This thing has tons of power, so I'm not nessecarily looking to add more on. I'm wondering what I could do at home to get a little more than 11-12 MPG. Also it has a three speed auto tranny. Does anyone make 4 or 5 speed with O/D tranny that can couple up with it. I love my truck, and don't want to sell it. I just want to be able to drive it on the highway without it staying in the 3500-4000 RPM range, and get a little better milage around town.
Thanks,
Ted

Sorry I can't help. I'm a huge Ford guy, but unfortunately I'm not familiar with the older trucks. Try Ford Truck World. I bet you could easily have all your questions answered on their forums.

I'm not sure, but I think the E4OD transmission would work, if that isn't what it already has. The E4OD is 4 speed with overdrive, they used it on the newer model year, 92-97. I know it was hooked to the 7.3, so I'm guessing it would bolt up to a 460.

I hate to tell you, but with a 7.5 liter engine, I don't think you'll squeeze too many more miles per gallon out of it.

The e4od is hands down the best choice. I got it in my 94 with a 351 and my 91 with a 302, the 91 averages 16 mpg and the 94 18-19. Im not firmiliar with the 7.5, I an speak for the older 7.3 (idi and turbo) and the new 7.3 like in my new f350. try the e40d, if worse ever came to worse ( i havent yet checked your location) I have a spare one and will be removing my rebuilt one from the 91. I hear terror storie for mpg, and most have those same motors as mine, but with the smaller aod tranny, the e4od will pull a house down.

I have the same transmission in my 94 f150, its a good one, except I had a problem where it would slip out of overdrive for a second or so and the only way to get it to engage again was to let off the gass for a second or 2 and then step on the gas again to get it to grab. It was a sensor mounted on the side of the transmission thtat failed and cost about $215. to fix but after that not a problem.

as for more fuel efficiency..... I hear mobil one oil is better and helps with 1-2 mpg and has a better life cycle than other oils.

Cold air intake would help out some, but I dont know if that would work on a deisel engine. make sure tire pressure is right, make sure you let it idle some before and after driving especially after a long day of driving let it idle for a good amount of time.

As for the red lining on highway... try hauling a big trailer and make the engine work some, really wont affect your mileage much, should keep the rpms down Wink (in all seriousness it might work I dont think the mpg goes down when its under a load unlike a gas engine)

These trucks arent old, they are just in their prime Cool

FTW is a good site though, sure that question has been asked.

True. They're just \"older\" compared to the Fords I'm working with. Wink

Just to clarify, the 7.5 (460) is a gas engine, while the 7.3 (444) is diesel. And for the 1989 model year, the 7-3's where IDI, non-turbo.

Does this truck have a carburetor or EFI?
