Does anybody have experience with the pagers from other manufactures. We have been less than satisfied with our Minitor V's and are looking at other options with our next purchase.

I use th Min V and Apollo 100's on different departments, and trust me as much as I dont like my Minitor the Apollo has come very close to being shot numerous times. In the past year alone I have gone through 4. One good thing I can say about them is that they are well covered by warranty. But they make my minitor look like a Lamborquini

The Apollo VP100 is an entry level. The new VP101 has been ruggedized and the VP200 can do more the the Minitor V. You can go to their site and buy them off of the GSA schedule too.

I will say cheaper is not always better and in this case I personally feel that the Apollo pager I currently have is a piece of junk

I'm doing this myself and IMO, there is no difference in reception than my Minitor Vs on UHF.It distorts at the second to loudest volume setting and at the loudest setting it is horribly distorted. The only plus to this is that it's small and lightweight, but I'll keep my Minitors.

Which band of VHF,high VHF or low VHF?They both run about the same but here's a link to PW Service's Minitor Vs:

http://www.pwservice.com/pagers/firepagers/minitor_v.aspx

The VHF-High Minitor V runs $375 and for VHF-Lowband it runs $385 for 1-5 pagers and the more you buy the more they take off.

We are continuing to purchase Min V's as they are working fine and for those that want a compact pager we are utilizing the Swissphone Quattrino. It is a modern tough duty pager that actually uses a crystal to receive instead of being synthesized. The receive on these are better than any of the Motorola junk (besides the always perfect Minitor II).

After a couple of months, use not abuse, the batteries don't make a connection like they initially did. So when it goes out you have no idea that your pager is actually off unless you bump one of the buttons to check. There have been a couple of times that they emitted the alert tone even though they have not been toned, and it's not a dead battery. The proprietary battery is also a pain and then how dang big they are.

We had that issue with two of our departments pagers so far (mine being one of them Evil or Very Mad) But Motorola has revised the housing for them (noted by a green dot in the bottom right corner of the cases) to make them able to hold the batteries better.

That and the fact that we had to swap out all our chargers for a revised one just makes it even more annoying.

The Minitor is one of the products by Motorola where I think they fell a little short. I prefer carrying an HT1250 other than lack of stored voice (well mine has it, but it doesn't work like you would expect) just because of the issues. I still swear by Motorola products, but the Minitors just don't really seem up to date in the way of technology, and their track record isn't exactly perfect. The Minitor IV was just a Minitor III in a slightly different housing. It is just hard to switch because unless you are using a technology like POSCAG for paging, there aren't any options I know of short of using a portable radio that offer more features for paging.

The first Vs had that battery issue cause i had it. then I got the revised version and it has yet to come loose. with the old one i just super glued the battery. Rolling Eyes but it worked. for how big it is i would rather carry a Kenwood 3173 radio since it does paging and can almost be the same price but the dept doesnt like the idea of 180 people having a radio.

the new Vs are much better.

If you don't mind my asking, what has been the major problem with them? I've had a 2, 3, and 4 and have had nothing but good things to say about them.

There is nothing really wrong with them (other than minor issues... I have been through 3 revisions of both desktop and amplified chargers.

The issue mostly is that they could be more it feels like sometimes

Yeah but there is a cost issue involved too, not just trying to keep 100 pre-arrival size-ups and notifications of responding to the station off the air

True.I Icom makes a fairly cheap portable/pager,actually,I believe it is cheaper than Minitor Vs.

I've had the Minitor II-V and the best so far has been the II Very Happy ..the V comes darn close, but just not identical.I've gotten used to having a Minitor V on each pocket so i can't say much Laughing

There is a reason companies will still sell you Minitor II's and everything you could possibly need for them, yet won't talk to you about IIIs and IVs. They were darn good, really simple, and solid for what they were. I do like the battery performance on the V though, and lately it seems to pick up dispatch better than my scanner does Confused

No complaints on past models, we've used nothing but Motorola's since forever, save for five Vertex VX-354. I am begging a rookie to trade me his Minitor III, my old pager. I wasn't aware of the revisions, so that's is some comfort. We purchased 12 when the V's were first released and then 5 more six months latter. These 8 pagers will replace the remaining older models we have 3-Keynotes, 2-III's, and 3-IV's.

Any comments on the Vertex radios, we needed five in a pinch so we cheaped out?
