i understand that some state do not allow sirens in pov's. imho, those vehicles should be dropped to the courtesy light level and held to general traffic laws.
you could be the safest driver in the world but thats not going to save you from that one idiot that manages to defy physics and logic and crash into you.
now things are probably different in rural and suburban area's, but i work in a major city(boston). light are useless w/o the siren. if i was just running lights, i would get to where i need to get to no faster than if i was dark
as an experienced emergency vehicle operator, i just dont feel its safe or logical to run code dark.
call times are estimates. mileage may vary. results not guear |

in your experiences, when there is gridlock on the highway, what do you do?
what do people on here do?
i am wondering about how people handle slow moving bumper to bumber traffic. do you get all over the air horns, wailer making all kinds of racket and freak everyone out? or do u use the wailer sparingly...giving people time to react and not panic?
if you don't believe this works, try it sometime. try getting into the thick of it and NOT get all crazy with tone switching and air horns. you will be AMAZED at how much faster you will get to where you want to go. i have tried both ways many times and i find that motorists tend to move a lot more orderly with lights and some blips on the wailer rather than right up their asses with all kinds of phaser and air horn. this is a metro area with a lot of traffic. |

I don't respond code in my POV. PA is a courtesy light state.
Once or twice I was in this type of situation driving the ambulance. I just made sure all my lights were on and starting hitting the different wails and yelp our siren system had, and accompanied it with quick, concise directions over the PA \"blue suburban pull to the right, red sedan push to the left, thank you! please clear a lane!\" |

| Ontario, Canada has 4 code designations. \"Code 4\" being the highest priority, and \"Code 1\" being the lowest. |

Or do what my lieutenant does, puts his FedSig Siren on HI-LO, and his SVP on phaser, and run those two tones simultaneously! If that doesnt clear traffic, I dont know what will!!!
But seriously, I think just chirping the siren by using the manual button is more effective than anything else. |

On my department (in Ohio I will add) it is up to the individual no matter what the call is on how to respond to the station. Some people have lights/sirens, some don't, either way you have 6 minutes to get to the station and out the door. No one responds to the scene unless it is a cardiac arrest or the on duty crew is a BLS crew and the call sounds ALS or they call for a Paramedic.
If you run lights, you gotta run sirens too. Lights have to be 500' to the front visible with normal atmospheric conditions, no 360 law in Ohio.
All apparatus responds to the scene with lights and sirens, regardless of the call unless it is specifically a \"Courtousy Call\" (I've fallen and just need help back into my w/c or bed type of call).
Responds = Lights/Sirens = Signal 27
En Route = No Lights/Sirens = Non-27 |

| think about it from a motorist standpoint, all of a suddent a huge flashing blinking thing is on your ass and all these really loud sounds are playing causing me to go deaf, they will freak out and not know what to do, calmly telling them what to do over the pa with some manual wail works 100% of the time |
