I obtained a nose mounted Q2B today and when i shot the juice to it to test it, I discovered that it does not coast like it should. This siren has not been used in probably 8 years and has been outside in the elements. we removed it from the truck today so it has not been laying on the ground. I do not hear anything rubbing against the stator when it is turning. The brake has been removed. I remember from childhood that this thing used to scream loud and proud with no problems. Any idea what my problem might be?? Thanks.

Chad

Depends on what type clutch it has. Go to Federal's website and select the Q and open the parts list. See if you have the current one way roller bearing clutch or the earlier screw type clutch, parts diagrams for both are listed. If its really old it might have the ball and ramp clutch.
If its the one way bearing type, this could be dragging and needs to be cleaned or replaced. If its the old ball and ramp clutch it might need a simple adjustment, if its the screw type, can not help, never messed with one.

I took the dust cover off and got to looking around. The copper clutch was adhered to the stator and I was able to get it loose with hardly any effort. Like i said earlier, it has been outside and unused for several years.I did notice however that the nut was rubbing the back of the dust cover and had cut a groove into it. Put it all back togather (without dust cover) and it sounds GRRReat !! Will it hurt to leave this cover off??

The only thing it will hurt is your fingers, or anything else that gets in that high-speed meat grinder.

I would cover it with something. You would rather not have john smith go poking around where he shouldnt be, getting his fingers cut and then suing for equipment not properly protected.

If it's just the dust cover, it probably won't hurt anything unless the siren is out in the elements. I thought you meant the front cover. If you put it back on a truck you should absolutely put the dust cover back on.
