Awesome collection!

Oh that we would have that kind of selection of mechanicals today.... the industry really lost something when most discontinued making mechanical sirens. They are still far superior to electronics in my opinion.

+1

While I am a fan of an electronic siren being used in combo with a mechanical siren, the mechanical should always be the primary. If it came down to having only one...bye bye electronic!

We can be glad that we still have the Federal Q2B, B&M SC8B Super Chief, B&M S8B and B&M CS8B available. There is also the Timberwolf siren even that it has some problems.

The information I have got is that the sirens are the same.
The early Screaming Eagle web site I have saved on my computer have the home page address www.timberwolfsirens.com. Now the present address is http://www.eaglesiren.com.

Code 3 have also sold it under their name.

From reading the specs on both sirens, it appears that they are different sirens.

I think I read somewhere a number of years ago, that the Timberwolf's were originally made from old B&M motorcycle siren leftovers, but I could be mistaken.

The sound of the Eagle on the video is very close to the sound of a Q2. The audio files on the Timberwolf site sound a bit throatier and a bit more nasal to me. Both have distinctive sounds, and both sound quite good to me...

I'd like to hear both of these in person to hear how loud they really are, and what the true timbre of these sirens sound like. It's hard to tell listening to them through electronic media.

The information I had was wrong. The Eagle siren and the Timberwolf siren have no relationship.
Probably the wrong information I had got was bacause the owner that now manufactures the Eagle siren was selling the Timberwolf siren before.
Due to the problems with the Timberwolf siren they stopped selling it and developed a siren for themself, the Screaming Eagle siren.

Are you planning on expanding your collection of mechanical sirens at this time?

I have a Federal Model 28 that has been mechanically restored and a B & M CS8B (all chromed) that Kevin O'Connell at B & M is restoring for me. I hope to have them up on Youtube in the near future. Someday I hope to find a CAM Coaster, the large MARS that looks similar to the Q and possibly a B & M Super-Chief. Not really interested in the smaller sirens.

I can't wait to see your CS8B video when it gets back from the shop.

B&M sirens have always been my absolute favorites. Perhaps it is because I grew up in So. California where they were the mainstay of the fire and police services in the 1960's. Then again, since Q2Bs are so common, maybe my love for B & M is just because they are different-- and sound better than the Q sirens, IMHO Smile. There is just something about those 8 ports....!

In the Fire Service on the East Coast it seems like they've never heard about B&M, and since they're an unknown, everyone goes with the Q2Bs. I only wish a couple of departments would break the "Super Chief ice" which would lead to more departments purchasing them.

I've never heard the CS8B before-- most of the rigs I knew had either the S8 behind the grille or the Super Chief. So I'm looking forward to your video.

Another Q arises from the dust. I have had the stator, stator guard and clutch assembly for 40 plus years sitting in a box in my garage. This past year I have acquired the other parts from various sources. Had the stator housing and guard rechromed, motor rebuilt and found a new grill and motor cover. Here is a video of its first test run naked, without covers and guards:

I have a Superchief being mounted on our 2001 Pierce Platform. It should be mounted sometime during the week of the 11th of August. Once it is done, I will film a video, take some pics and have them posted. Will keep you advised.

I think he is talking about a more recent one that actually looks almost exactly like a Q. On the front is a mesh grille and a red "oval" with MARS in white letters written on it. There is a picture of one in the IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting 4th edition. I have been looking for another picture of one ever since.

But that could be it to, it looks close.

Henry, thanks for posting the pic of the Q disassembled. I meant to ask you on the ARS forums to post it over here but, forgot. Cool

Got my B & M CS8B M9 back from B & M today. Kevin O'Connell and his staff did an excellent job of restoration. They included a letter stating this siren was shipped to Ward LaFrance on February 2, 1973. It's flawless. Will post video soon.
