| Been volunteering for about 2 years now and finally decided to go through the Firefighter certification process. Started Firefighter Technology at my local College (class still goes through the Firefighter I & II program, but the Fire Academy calls it Firefighter Technology for some reason). Then next semester I'm going to go through EMT-B. My current plan is to keep my job as a Corrections Officer in Missouri and work part-time for a local department... Farmington Fire Department. Now, this plan is subject to change. Farmington is going to be opening a second City House within the next 2-5 years and hiring 9 more full-time FF's. So, when the time comes and the $$$ is there I'll attempt to go Full-Time with them. My only hold back is how good the benefits are with the State. Definitely hard to give those up. Any suggestions or stories from those of you who've left an existing employment for a Full-Time FF position? |

Hmmm.... I thought FF1 & 2 Test out and practicals was easy.... but I have alot of friends not passing parts of it now.... and found out from an instructor buddy of mine that after Sepetember they will change the entire curriculum of FF1 & FF2 to coicide with the Essentials 5 that just came out.
Good luck.

| There probably won't be a whole lot of drastic changes to the FF-1 and FF-2 curriculum. The NPFA 1001 standard hasn't changed in 10 years, only the textbooks and the way some of the information is delivered from some of those texts. The new IFSTA, Jones & Bartlett, and Delmar texts will start appearing in classrooms in the next couple of months. |

Its not really all that hard if you pay attention to the information. FFI is doing, FF2 is/was why you did what you did in FFI, but I know they took parts of II and swapped them with FFI a few years back.
Building construction, search techniques, equipment testing is where most people get hung up, and its really not all that hard.
Comes down to how macho the instructors will try to be.
Back in the day, I had an instructor from Simsbury, and there was a bunch of people from the same dept in the class. After we got tired of them getting special treatment and all the hands on time, our half of the class had a mutiny.
Afterwards, he laid back for a little while...then when the new guys started in the next class, he was back to being an ass again.. oh well. |
