    How did they do this?

    Hi all,

The department I volunteer at uses CVPI's for their cars. I am assuming they use a fleet version or something because all the cars have a universal key (i.e. one officer can move another officer's car).

When I started riding out, I noticed that officers have the ability to leave their cars on but remove the key. The way they do it is, there is a little red button on the left side of the steering wheel. When they press and hold this button, they can turn the key as if they were turning the car off, but, the car stays on and they are able to remove the key.

I thought this was pretty cool, and was wondering if this is a modification that the installer did? Or does Ford do these. And any clue on the electronics behind it? It's pretty interesting

    Thanks

10-75 has the soundoff version for around $80.00. We had them on our ambulances at work.

Montreal paramedic service is the same. Secure-idle, and fleet keys. Each of the 140 ambulances uses the same keys.

Tremco makes these anti-theft devices for Crown Vics. They pop up on E-Bay used all the time

Do any of these products shut off the engine if shifted into gear without the key?

you can also get a basic remote start system and do the same thing. All of the directed electronics (viper, python, avital, etc) unites have an activation input that you can easily hook up a push button to. It also will not allow the car to go into drive without the key being in it, plus you get a remote start for the winter.

Most of the secure idle systems I have encountered will turn the engine off if the brake pedal is depressed... which is the first thing one does before shifting into D.

Regarding the vehicles all being keyed alike, this is an option for departments (and a smart one if you ask me). It is also my understanding that the microchipped keys can be "deleted" from the option list for agency cars as well.
