Thread: Edit Button Missing

    Edit Button Missing

The Edit button seems to be missing from posts that I made, not in the Ring. Is this a change, or is something wrong?

    Dan

I see it in this forum, but not in other forums. Specifically, I was trying to update posts in Rota-Beam Family History.

According to another post, it looks like we can no longer edit, say in the vintage section, after a short time period. This seems to be a change, as I have been editing my Rota-Beam Family History thread right along, as I gain new info.
I guess the only way to add info to a historical thread is to add another post, although it will disrupt the flow of the order of the. information.
    Moderators, does this sound correct?
    Thanks.

Pretty much, edit features have been mostly removed due to abuse of the feature. In most sections users can edit for a set amount of time after a post, but after that its all gone.

You will have to update threads by making an additional post vs editing a existing thread. (which, in the long run will be ideal so users can see the thread has been updated by a new post contained within)

An annoyance online since original BBS days- early 90's. Damn I miss modem tones... but not 14.4 kbit/s.

You know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I'm going to get and beat you with until you understand who's in command here.... (best quote ever!)

Unfortunately people have been abusing the edit feature so much (using it to delete their threads) that we had to limit it. I am considering alternate options...and open to suggestions.

Maybe set it that after a certain amount of time, all OP changes should have to be approved by a Mod?

Not sure if theres a program but my thought would be to use something like the report post feature, use that and write in what the change needs to be. I know its more work but might be needed. whats your thoughts?

Not a fan. I think it should be automatic, like when you post something in the "Reviews" section, it should alert a Mod or the Admin.

I understand what your saying but that would be alot of unneeded notification. Not every post needs to be edited and if its automatic is the Mod or Admin going to know what you want changed???

if you cant change your own thread then what is the point in having a "one thread per user only" in the classified sections....?
Well, what's this year got in store?

I can't be sure, but I don't think it would be a very big amount...It would only apply to OP's that were, for example, 4 days old and older.

The Mod would be able to see what the OP is now, and what changes you want.

The whole "one thread per user only" rule, I think, was to eliminate having billions of For Sale threads. This way, you have only one. But if everything is sold, they can't just delete the whole OP, to read"...", like they have been doing. Any changes would have to be approved first.

I dont understand how a Mod or Admin are going to know what you want changed unless you tell them via pm or the report post feature.

Let me explain. A mod will get an alert, showing that there's a request for a OP change. He will look at what the OP currently says, and then look at what the OP will say, and will then make the decision to approve, or not. If he gets a request asking for the OP to be completely deleted, meaning, it should contain no text, obviously the mod will not approve that request. Instead, he can lock it for him.

That's a little different. If a seller doesn't have the intelligence to make it easy to see his items that are for sale, then they will have a hard time making sales. But that's the seller's problem.

Here is what we are going to do:

1-Fix the permissions so you can edit classified posts again
2-Abandon the current system (upgrade still in progress)

The current system isn't going to get any major overhauls right now while we are still trying to get a new system going. The designer of the new system is doing a major rework based on issues noted in beta testing here.
