New Dual Color LED Beacon from Star/SVP( now with day time pics..)

    From this thread.

well, after waiting a week past the expected delivery date i received my light.

Apparently my beacon didnt come with the slide your supposed to use to change flash patterns, but i made due with a knife...

it is a fairly large beacon, i opted for the sution mag mount. it seems strong but i havent had a chance to speed test it yet.

    next to a sentry beacon

    here's the guts...

the 3 pins is how you change flash patterns. you only use the first 2. the item that didnt come with my beacon would normaly sit on the last 2 pins and when you want to change patterns you lift it off and tp it to the first 2. this beacon has the ability to skip patterns the longer you touch the pins.

there are 16 patterns available. (if i remember right) you are able to skip 3 patterns at a time the longer you hold the pins. the light will flash 1 time for pattern 1 2 times for pattern 4 3 times for pattern 8 etc... it also is steady red. or amber. if you put it on dual mode it will flash between red and amber.

the "diffuser" on top contains the 8 leds.

following pics taken with light on steady mode.

    outside...
    amber with no dome

    red with no dome...

the red is significantly dimmer than the amber.

    amber with dome on....

    red with dome on....

standing 40 feet away with amber... (zoomed in)

    and red...

amber at 40 feet no zoom....

    and red...

As you can see in the photos it has a nice "halo" in the middle of the light that is amazingly bright. the rest of the dome lights up with even light. i tried a few different patterns out. the single rotator pattern was a nice "twinkle" and not very bright. the double rotator looked more useful (2 lights lit up as it "rotated" vs jus 1 light"

if you have the light in dual mode it will flash or rotote 1 cycle then swap colors.

    Factory specs.

overall i like the light, it appears to be a good value for its $159 price tag.

as of yet i havent had to use it in a "real world" application, but im sure unless im sitting under a street light or something this will be adequate.

So there's no cigar plug with dual on/off and a pattern switch? I thought that was how the mag. mounts were going to be set-up.

The initial plan was to have two power switches and two pattern switches, but that did not end up happening. I'm not sure why, but I would speculate that the cost of making a mold for a three switch cig plug was prohibitive.

there is a video in the lighting discussion section. i dont have a way to take vids. it would take a long time to do with having to take the dome off to change patterns and i dont have a way to edit vids.

do you have a lincoln continetal or a buick regal? this thing is as big as a fed sig sentry beacon ( which i posted) its BIG

    and now for the pics.

    Taken at 3pm yesterday

    light off

    amber

    red

    close up on red

and amber up against a dual talon and tir 3's.

also this vac/ mag mount was speed tested to 70mph and didnt budge. on both highways and curvy up and down backroads.
being that i was pulling a trailer i didnt get to 70 on the backroads lol. also why i didnt go faster on the highway. dragging a 1500lbs kinda slows you down a wee bit.

later ill put it on the kia and get around 80 - 90 with it to see how it holds up.

Big is an understatement ! Jeez you are right Jared.... Forget the dash part, unless you want to obliterate half the windshield...

Now I know my eyesight is not what it used to be.... but it doesn't seem to be the brightest star in the sky, or is it ?
The "red from a distance" pic is not very convincing...

the red is significantly dimmer than the amber.

you can see a hint of red in daytime from a distance. i was standing about 60 feet away. i was using a cell phone so its not a good representation of what i saw.

there is still room in the "diffuser" that more leds could have been put in. if this thing had 8 amber leds and 8 red leds itd probably knock your socks off.

As Gatekeeper says, not that convinced by the day shots... and ok the camera had alot to do with it, but you can really see anything. Does the taller model have more LED's in it?
