Gotta give those "Green Mountain Troopers" credit. They have alot to cover with less than 300 field troops the rank of lieutenant or lower. Tough job, good outfit.

WOW! 300 is all ? I would at least guessed they had more than that working the road
I believe New Hampshire has appx. the same number.
I still remember the day i was in vermont and a state trooper pulled me over with the same thing he was driveing. I had a 93 Green jeep cherokee with a all blue setup only thing that was different was I had a mini edge and they had a full size. I need to see if i have any pictures of that truck.

I remember driving by a barracks and it appeared to be closed. So we swung around and pulled in. Sure enough there was a sign on the door that said it was unmanned and to call such and such number for assistance. We drove about a mile up the road, swung around again, and drove by at just over 100 and my GF at the time took a polaroid of the blur.....86" 5.0 Mustang GT fastback....god I miss that car....
You only live once so don't screw it up!
They have 327 sworn members total , less than 300 of which are lieutenants or below (ranks above lieutenant are not assigned to field operations). Of those, you have to take into account many may work in specialized units (like BCI, Training Division and other adminstrative sections) and not road patrol. They operate 12 individual barracks out of four troops statewide.
I remember not too long back going to a friends wedding in Vermont. I stopped by the local barracks (Middlesex) to take pictures of the cruisers. I was told by the trooper on the desk that at that time, there was no midnight shift or 24 hour coverage performed by the state police. Any emergencies during the overnight hours requiring a trooper initated a "call-out". I'm not sure if that's still the way they operate currently.
Dan is correct about the size comparisons between NH and VT state police. The New Hampshire State Police is only slightly larger (most recent figures I could find were 380 sworn employees which included the 2008 merger of the former New Hampshire Highway Patrol agency into the state police) and operate 7 individual Troop/stations statewide. Maine is also comparable, with 341 sworn members operating out of 8 individual Troop/stations. These agencies have to do alot with a little, especially when you consider they handle primary police responsibilities (sometimes along with sheriffs depts.) for the majority of the communities in their states that do not provide their own police agencies.

Can someone confirm with me that VT State Trooper units are take-home cars?
