    Help Me Outfit My Ride

I think there should be a section on this topic. There are many people out there that are really not all that sure of how to go about things our what to get.

There used to be a thread with info as to what the vehicle is used for, what colors are allowed, what vehicle you are using etc....

I think it's a good idea. I don't get as much time to read here as I used to, so when I read the technical sub-section, I generally skip over these topics quickly, as they're very repetative. Having them in a separate sub-section would eliminate this, and centralize the information for people looking for it. .....(not that the newbies look anyways )

Should it be divided up? Personal Vehicles and then Professional Vehicles maybe???

Looking at the current threads we have where members request advice on installs and builds I think we could borderline justify a general "project design/help/advice" section. The main problem I see is where to draw the line. At some point peoples' tech questions about existing installs will come up. How new of an install would it have to be? How complete of an install...? ie ground up or just adding some grill lights.... ? Maybe divide it into "Project advice: from scratch" and "project advice: additions, refurbs and addons" ? The other issue is a big portion of the vintage and tech sections are made up of project advice. I'm not sure what would be left of those sections without project advice. We might have to exempt vintage projects all together. The other option is to make subforums within the tech sections for project and build advice.

Those are my thoughts/concerns/ideas on the subject.... feedback is requested...

i wouldnt say "project" i would make it specificaly VEHICLE. a project to some might be an upfit for some or a complete restore, or adding 1 light to others.

for example it could be a "project" to install a flasher for a HID system or someone has a project they're building like the ghostbusters pathfinder

personal vehicle install or addon, technical info advice.

department or other vehicle install or add on, technical advice.

could be subforums in the already technical section

when i click on the "lighting discussion thread" i expect to see discussions on new lights, technical questions, opinions on usage positions etc. innovations of lighting idea's, and "general" help with installing a light system (not whole installs). etc

    not...

where do i put this on my dodge.
im getting a 20 yr old ford and want to outfit it.
my dept got a grant how can we rewhack out the lights that work fine now.
how do i upfit my delorean
how do i put a visor light on the roof of my 1980 gremlin

    and things of those nature.

the redundancy is if people actualy searched for their vehicles in the "upfitters section" and "personal install sections" they might see where 20 cars of their type have already been outfitted. i would certainly not unentertain the idea of the outfitted section being seperated into manufactures of the vehicles but then we would have a subsection that has encapulated the whole World Wide Web.
    as in

    ford
    chevy
    dodge
    nissan
    etc.

    or even simpler.

imports, exports, but thats a real blurry line now adays.

    just my idears

Limiting it to vehicles would help with draining the vintage section... but I'm not sure there is enough volume of legit "pimp my ride" threads to justify it. A good many of those threads digress into the same ford vs. chevy arguments eventually anyway. I agree it would have to be limited to vehicles.... I'm just not sure if there is enough real content there.

You asked for my feedback, so now you're going to get it. I don't believe there should be a separation between "adding to existing installs", and "new installs". At the end of the day, it's still the same basic request for information/feedback on an installation. There's no need to have a billion sections, for each individual question.

Looking at it I'm starting to agree. If you cut out all the ford vs. chevy bs and existing installs there isn't enough content.

I humbly suggest this to the seniors...what about instead of people posting a thread for every install, they post the video clip/pics in a designated thread. I.e. F-150 thread, Dodge Ram thread, Dodge Charger thread...etc. Then newbies can see a bunch of videos and equipment on the vehicle they're searching for. Even if it isn't our install, people like cpdogboy and the other YouTube stalkers (meant to be funny) can post videos they find and list the equipment. It would be the ultimate way to compare different equipment on the same vehicle. We even could go crazy and post years to keep it the same body style (I.e. 2007-current Chevy Tahoe.) What say you senior installer/upfitter/enthusiasts????

I for one have only ONE install thread. I know I am not the only one who does this. That would help reduce the amount of BS... Maybe?

Separating threads by the make and model of a vehicle is going to be totally ridiculous. Even if you went with just models and not their respective generations (eg. 1992-1997 F-Series), you'd have a ton of little sections with not much in any of them. There's a fine line between making the information more accessible and being able to navigate the site effectively.

I suggest we split off all of the install help from the "Visual Warning Section" and put it into a revised "Installs Section." The revised section would have two parts- planning/building and completed vehicles. The planning/building part could be for the people who don't know where to mount their equipment or who want suggestions/advice. The completed section would be for the likes of cajunblitz who don't need any help or advice- you build a vehicle and post it there.

Really? You think that would be rediculous? Search for Dodge Ram, title only search, and I got 9 pages of results. Having a thread for them with install only would help. People could still start a new thread for specific questions...but you have to agree it'd organize the threads...and MAYBE prevent newB's from asking for lighting help in a dodge ram.

A search for "Dodge Ram" does net 9 pages of results- from every section of ELB. Not only that, but that also includes any mention of "Dodge," most of which are Chargers. Besides, no matter how many sections you make, the noobs who are asking the questions are the same noobs who can't use the search function and who can't seem to figure out if their "new" Edge 9000 will fit their 1999 Ram pickup. If they can't find the search function, how are they going to navigate all of the different sub sections and actually post something meaningful?

After looking at post volume and breakdown, I think this would best be handled a post tagging system..... ie users could tag their tech posts by type.... either way I am not undertaking any project to reorganize anything right now.

That sounds like it would work.
