At a news conference on Sunday afternoon, the Shawnee Fire Department said John Glaser, 33, was a six-year veteran who leaves behind a wife and two young children. The department said the family has requested privacy.

The department said Glaser was "a nice guy, a good friend and a great dad," who spoke often about his children. It said Glaser was the first Shawnee firefighter to die in the line of duty.

The fire was reported by automatic alarm at 8:55 p.m. Saturday at 13408 W. 75th Court, according to fire officials. When firefighters arrived, they found the home burning out of control. Neighbors told firefighters they thought two people and a dog were inside.

Firefighters began attacking the fire and searching the home.

The homeowner was not at home at the time of the fire, but his dog was. Firefighters rescued the dog. One witness told KMBC that the family cat did not survive the fire.

As they were searching the home at 9:12 p.m., a mayday call went out because a firefighter was missing, according to the news release. Several firefighters searched the home and found Glaser unresponsive at the rear of the home.

The department said the smoke was so heavy that crews were in a "feel and go" operation while searching for the firefighter.

Flames poured from a home that caught fire in Shawnee late Saturday. A 33-year-old Shawnee firefighter died in the fire. More

A resident told KMBC that the firefighter fell. The firefighter was not breathing and in cardiac arrest when he was rushed by ambulance to a hospital, Johnson County Med-Act officials told KMBC.

Glaser died a short time later at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, according to the fire department's release.

A second firefighter was treated and released from a hospital. The Shawnee Fire Department described his injury as "very minor."

It took firefighters about two hours to get the fire under control. The home suffered heavy damage. When the sun came up early Sunday, most of the home's roof was gone.

These are videos of todays funeral percession for FF John Glaser, Shawnee, KS Fire Department. Over 100+ apparatus were involved, not including 10+ ambulances, 75+ chief/command vehicles and 200+ police vehicles and 50+ motorcycles (Patriot Gaurd, American FF M/C). Percession took 1 hour from start to finish. Estimated 700+ uniformed personnel attended the funeral. RIP brother.

You could have worded your thread title a little differently, I really didn't know what to expect.

That is awesome, truly amazing. Unfortunately we lost an officer 2 months ago. I was in the Honor Guard procession that left the church early and formed up at the gravesite. The entire 20 or 30 mile route was lined with fire apparatus and police vehicles. Every intersection between the church and the gravesite had police or fire manning the station. Every overpass on the highway had a fire truck. Police agencies lined the highway. Several departments had their K9 handlers and dogs lined up on the shoulder. The honor guard procession lasted 1.5 miles. The actual funeral procession with motor escort was over 5 miles. They shut down interstate 70 and the Baltimore, MD beltway on a Friday afternoon for the procession. It was such an incredible sight, and I pray to God that I never see it again.

A friend of the Glasers family is involved with the production of "Rescue Me". They are paying tribute to John Glaser in the final episode of the new season. Here is a picture of Denis Leary next to Glasers name and birthdate that is spray painted on the set.

With both of the LODD's from my old department they were amazing. I've been to too many others, including friends on other departments but it amazes me every time. From the community to other agencies that go out of the way the respect and appreciation can never be expressed.

Officer Ayala's funeral procession was amazing. We brought out our engine and set it up on 108 @ Goldmine.

This was an impressive showing of support in Kansas.

The local TV station just had the funeral with a live feed. Even though I wasn't able to attend due to my injury it was good to see it. Trust me it is just as painful to see it though a computer as it is in person.

While I don't see eye to eye with FF's all the time, this is a terrible loss for the CFD. Took my little ones to the end of the block to pay my respects as he was carried to his final resting place.

RIP and Godspeed sir.

Everyone be careful out there.
