New York State Park Police Paint Scheme?

The green and silver Diagonal is the newest color scheme. The one in the first picture was the previous, and the green horizontal stripe was before that, which they still have a couple with that too. Not to mention unmarked Impalas which are used by sergeants and above. Those cars appear to all be from Saratoga Spa State Park judging by the background and have an 11 on the license plate for the Capital District Region.

Yup, these were taken at the Spa. The reason I was wondering was bease they were all parked next to each other and appear to be the same year/model impala. I've seen both but knew they wouldn't opperate with 2 schemes. Both do look good.

I have worked with a bunch of them before too and are a great group of officers.

I worked as a seasonel ranger there, the like people have said the green/silver is current... if you look under the near by trees next to the horse trailer you will see our (the rangers) truck.... and then you will want to cry

Are the rangers armed? What are your duties?

No their not armed. Mostly for traffic, toll collections, pools, and enforce general park rules. Park Police have state jurisdiction and usually patrol the streets throughout the park and roads outside of it. They also work at concerts in conjunction with concert security, like drug searches, drunk patrons, and parking lot patrol. A lot of the police officers you see at concerts aren't usually local so they don't generally make arrests.

What's with the half populated bars?

It's not like they do heavy chases or traffic duties... The lightbar fits their duties.

What good are police that aren't armed? The amount of dope and nazi labs in state parks is amazing. Seems like a crappy idea to have unarmed folks w/ POLICE all over their stuff.

Columbus Metroparks is the same way with their Rangers. The trucks have red & blue lights, "RANGER" written on them, staff with badges. The Metroparks is firm on them not having firearms, despite some of them being peace officer certified. Might as well contract the job out to an unarmed security officer.

Clear Fork Reservoir Police near Mansfield has armed peace officers during the season, driving marked cruisers. In the off season, you become a maintenance person in the park.

No, the police ARE armed.... The Rangers are not.

park rangers are eyes and ears for the police, they handle park rules violations such as parking and site use permits as well as do traffic details for concerts and events. At the end of the night they are security guards with some extra authority. Then there are state park forest rangers who are peace officers (still no firearms), who do normal police duties except seasonel. And lastly park police, the regular full time cops.

Forest Rangers also take care of firefighting duties in parks large enough.

There are approximately 146 true NYS Forest Rangers. The rest may be called "rangers" but the true Rangers are armed police officers who go through the same academy as the DEC Police. They are also grads of the ranger school at Wanakena.

That sounds more like it. Noone that is unarmed should be empowered to take enforcement actions. Places, unqualified persons at risk. Oh, well, not my state, (anymore).

State Forest Rangers (DEC)= Police (guns, asp, oc, cuffs, badges, red lights/sirens etc)

Parks forest rangers= peace officers (asp, cuffs, badges, red lights/sirens etc)

State Park Rangers= Public Officers..... Think animal control level authority

Both types of forest rangers also do medical and forest fire fighting

Even the management staff at the DEC campgrounds wear patches that say Ranger. I've had some interaction with a couple of their people that wear badges. They tell me that they have no enforcement power and are pretty much the same as security guards. They said that if they have a problem that needs a citation, an arrest, or ejection from the park, they have to call the State Police or the DEC Conservation Police, or The State Forest Rangers. They are spread so thin here in the Adirondacks that you usually get one from each agency at best.

just an update, we (the saratoga region park rangers) got a new to us blazer... ill try to snag a pic at work tmrw, and also got a gator type thing with a decent lighting package (pics to follow some time tmrw)

I know what you mean about the off season. Only mine was every day. I worked as an in house security officer at the local hospital. I wore a full uniform and badge. I had no arresting authority what so ever and the supervisor maintained that the most important assignment in the last half of the shift was to sweep the smoking area out in the parking lot. Half of the shift was spent doing maintenance, supply runs, temp changes in the pateints' rooms, and laundry pick up. Since I worked alone, if a real emergency were to happen, I would be several minutes away. I questioned why we wore full uniforms if we did all the extra non-security work. The answer was so people would see us and feel secure. There was even a few times I wished I didn't have the uniform on, just regular street clothes. Most comments would be why security was doing that particular job. I ran out of excuses after a very short time. Yes, I feel much safer seeing the police arrive to a scene in a garbage truck since the crime happened while on their daily trash collection rout. :bonk:

NYS Forest Rangers are not Police Officers, they are trained Peace officers. The difference is that all Police Officers in NY at least, are Peace Officers but all Peace Officers are not Police Officers.

There are NYS Encon Police and there are NYS Park Police, these are Police Officers. They may carry badges but do not wear a badge on thier uniforms. The only NY State Agency Police that I ever saw wear a badge is the NYS Mental Health Police. :D
