VIRGINIA STATE POLICE MOURN LINE-OF-DUTY DEATH OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA TROOPER
RICHMOND - The Virginia State Police are grieving the tragic loss of a Trooper killed in the line of duty in Hanover County Friday night (Oct. 5, 2012). Trooper Andrew D. Fox was assigned to Pulaski County in Southwest Virginia, but was working a special assignment at the State Fair of Virginia at the time of his death.
At 9:53 p.m. Friday, Trooper Fox was directing traffic on Route 30 at Theme Park Way in Hanover County. He was wearing his reflective, traffic safety vest and was standing with other troopers directing traffic through the intersection. West and eastbound traffic had blinking yellow traffic lights in the intersection and the troopers were using their issued illuminated, baton flashlights to direct traffic through the intersection.
A 1992 Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on Route 30 through the intersection when it struck Trooper Fox. Troopers and several bystanders ran to the SUV and lifted it off the trooper. Two troopers immediately began providing first aid and administering CPR.
Trooper Fox was transported to VCU Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
No one in the Jeep Cherokee was injured in the crash. The driver was an adult female from Doswell, Va. She had a juvenile passenger in the vehicle with her at the time of the crash. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting with the crash investigation, which remains ongoing at this time. Charges are pending consultation with the Hanover County Commonwealth's Attorney.
"Trooper Fox's death is a tremendous loss to the Virginia State Police family," said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent. "He’s highly-regarded and respected by his peers and supervisors across the state as a superior trooper, mentor, field training officer and instructor. He served the Commonwealth as a public safety professional with genuine valor and pride. We keep his family in our prayers during this incredibly difficult time."
Trooper Fox graduated Feburary 2007 from the Virginia State Police Academy as a member of the 111th Basic Session. Upon graduation from the Academy, Trooper Fox was first assigned to the Fairfax Division's Area 48 Office in Springfield. The 27-year-old Tazewell County native was currently assigned to Pulaski County, which is part of the Wytheville Division's Area 24 Office.
A Virginia Tech graduate, Trooper Fox was a former Town of Tazewell Police Officer and member of the Draper Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, parents, a sister, and a step-brother. Funeral arrangements are pending at this time.
