WORCESTER, Mass.—One firefighter was killed and a second injured when they became trapped in a building that partially collapsed during a blaze, officials said Thursday.
Fire Chief Gerard Dio confirmed the death but did not immediately identify the firefighter. The condition of the second firefighter was not immediately known.
The fire occurred nearly 12 years to the day that six Worcester firefighters were killed in a massive warehouse blaze.
The blaze started early Thursday in the large multi-family home on Arlington Street. About a dozen people lived in the building and Dio said firefighters went in after receiving a report that one resident was still inside.
"One of the occupants said his friend was still up there, so two crews went up to do a secondary search for the individual and there was a structural collapse, and at that time two firefighters were trapped," Dio said.
The men were freed and taken to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Dio said, but one of them was later pronounced dead.
It was unclear Thursday whether all residents had been accounted for after the fire.
