Rotators in the grill, on the hood, on the fender or "down low"

When Dodge and Plymouth big block engines ruled the road as County Mounties in a plain brown wrapper (1974?) I saw Beacon Ray juniors mounted within and behind the grill. Others used Dietz or Federal Vitalites. More beam spread than sealedbeam lights, for sure.

Critique on my plan for wiring my truck for emergency response

I would recommend a separate circuit for the radio that is grounded back to the vehicle ground near the battery.  However, Pimp's correct about LED lights using an accessible ground near the light.  You could also consider use of a wireless switch with relays to activate the rear lights and...

Mobile Phone Siren Apps to PA300 Radio Rebroadcast Funtion

You may find the siren volume is reduced if you try this application. PA functions usually top out at 45 watts and this may be the same with radio rebroadcast. Only way to know for certain is to check it with a sound meter (in decibels).

    NYPD mechanical siren controls

I recall a former fire officer from Largo Florida that was a sales rep for Mine Safety Appliances who used a large thermal flasher to cycle a model 28. But the Pulsator used a cam to oscillate the tone. This fire chief liked the mechanical tone, but also had an electronic siren. He used a...

    Flasher styles

I prefer the blade and screw terminals. I have used these mostly for headlight flashers.

    Stem Light Thread

As I recall, the beacon could be used when raised, and there were several floodlight options for mounting under the beacon platform. Chattanooga Fire Department had one on their light duty rescue rig in the late 1970's.

    Need some help with ideas

What about something other than a bar? Federal 175 or Dietz 211 in the center of the roof with lollipop 7 inch flashing lights on each side. Then a fender mounted 66 or other mechanical siren.

Historical train derailment and explosion of 1978

I was in the State command post for over three days when this happened in 1978. Burn patients were flown to BrooksArmy hospital and other destinations on a DC 9 Nightingale and in the aftermath, a burn center was created at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

    Hello from Tennessee

Welcome abroad. I am with Davidson County Rescue Squad and retired after more than 38 years with the State EMS office. I started with the Knoxville squad in 1969-70.

    Best Car Battery?

While Optima is an excellent choice, the price difference between them and good batteries is significant. If you only have an infrequent need for emergency warning devices Interstate is highly rating. For my car, I continue using Autozone batteries that have a good recommendation from...

    Concealed carry for firefighters

My brother was a USAF Crash Fire Rescue tech in Korea. Their crews carried folding stock automatic rifles under their turnout coats whenever any aircraft with nuclear weapons might be on base. And many of our tactical medics are specially commissioned LEOs to authorize them to carry. But in...

    Ladder truck question

What are the building codes in the response area concerning multistory buildings? The height of structures and ISO ratings usually triggered the need for bigger ladders in Tennessee towns. There are a lot of training evolutions for a straight ladder, and using a bucket will decrease the load...

    Stolen Sirens: A quick update.

filE=Skip Goulet;464044]I have considered filing charges but was advised by the deputy working the case (and still dragging his feet) that it won't do any good to file until the will is probated, which might give us a clue as to where the daughter sold the sirens. The daughter claims to have...

    Shop Rates

One of the local Motorola radio shops that also does light and siren installs charges $65 per hour plus parts. But I was impressed they use several technicians if the shop isn't booked, so they get the job done faster and do nice work. They have a ton of experience with Ford Explorers and...

Is this supposed to be this way???

The fact is that most automotive electric output is really 13.5 volts, not 12. And because of the electronics, this light (and a lot of strobe lights) may be a little more discriminating than other lights. The same voltage considerations affect two way radio performance, too. That doesn't...

    Stolen Sirens: A quick update.

Have you been advised to go ahead and pursue criminal charges? I almost think that you would need to so that anyone who purchased the sirens would know they were holding stolen property. Also, consider a civil lawsuit against the daughter that admitted selling the sirens. The fact that she...

TN meet & greet tour 2014

I may not make the Pulaski meeting but I will be speaking at the annual EMS workshop in October. I am the chaplain with the Davidson County Rescue Squad. If we can get some idea of a date (suggest a Friday), I will help check out possible sites. THP is a possibility, and/or the Metro...

    Not enough lights 'n' sirens...

I remember units like this. No medical equipment under the squad bench, just five or six more 12 v batteries. Fortunately you could half the sealed beam flashing lights load because of an alternating flasher, but two 184 beacons and a Twin Sonic? Yeah, a couple of fireballs on the front cowl...

TN meet & greet tour 2014

We've done them before; but it is going to take more than just a couple of us to put it together, and about three months lead time to confirm any tour schedules.

Streamlight Litebox. Need idea's on decals/stripes.

I used strips of plastic tape or reflective orange and blue scotchlite tape on my black maglight and rescue tools, like my prybars and pryaxe. Carabiners, too. My flashlights are now anodized blue, and I haven't carried rescue tools in years- I have always used the yellow ever ready 6 Volt...

    TK-790h won't transmit

See if a radio shop may be willing to take it on consignment or buy it from you? If the repairs are simple, they may still make money on it or may be able to use it for repair parts.

    17 Minute EMS Response

I am pleased to know that the Nashville Airport (BNA) is prepared for cardiac arrest emergencies and has a good record of response. Getting an ambulance on scene within 17 minutes may be a problem around major airports, but such poor response from airport security and first responders, and lack...

    Mobile Scanner Antenna Question

which frequency spectrum will need the most scanner selectivity? For a quarter wave antenna, use 2950 divided by the frequency in megahertz gives the length in inches. Most uhf/VHF scanner antenna are approximately 18.5 inches, and these work well for 800 MHz too.

    Best BDU-type pants for LEO's

Good luck with the Propper pants. I have two pairs of navy blue bdu pants for my rescue squad uniform. I purchased the summer weight law enforcement style and I love them. The uniform shop had to special order the EMT pants. The "medic' style is heavier and so baggy I feel like I may need...

    TK-790h won't transmit

The cost of repairs will depend on the nature of the problem. Trouble shooting will cost about $90 per hour around middle TN, then if any parts are needed and time to repair. I definitely recommend you try to find out the problem before buying another radio. I paid about $295 for the 790 I...

    TK-790h won't transmit

You will need to do some basic transmitter checks. First, check with a wattmeter to see if you transmit rf power. If you have a radio signal, then the problem may be internal to the voice modulation If it has been more than a couple of years since the radio was bench tested, a check by the...

BFD with "deck gun 101" video...

Cover the exposures and surround and drown! Good use of the deck nozzle but wish he had deployed it initially on the exposed wall of the less involved structure. What about the ladder? looks like it has a fixed deluge nozzle, too; however, the water supply may have been an issue. I...

When did Beacons fall out of fashion?

A big reason for the change from beacons to light bars came when newer ambulances and fire apparatus after 1987 began to use diesel engines. So there was a need to reduce the current draw from beacons, and that could be accomplished using strobes or halogen lights. Diesel alternators were not...

Wow. I was lucky enough to have owned a new one in 1974. Wish I had never sold it to a fried.
