    Federal CT-1 lightbar

@stansdds, my main question is: Does (did) the CA code REQUIRE par46? If so, what about the later Cal-spec AeroDynic steady red to the front (was it a par36)? Did the codes change in the 80s (thus rendering the CT-2-P incapable of satisfying earlier codes)? And one can naturally assume the...

    Federal CT-1 lightbar

I may be misremembering, but I thought that some versions of the 17-C (17x-C) had a par 36 to the front. Also, I thought CA code only required it to be visible a certain distance forward. But it’s a heck of a good idea…too bad the CTS rained on its parade.

Dietz 7-11 differences in plus collector

I was thinking the same thing, but my knowledge base on Dietz 7-11 beacons is limited. FedSig used the same tech on their 175 and 176 beacons. Brochure wording was something along the lines of reducing power consumption on scene and distracting flashes of white light.

    Visibar build question

The only FS brackets I am aware of were for mounting sirens or beacons to the bar. If you mount them directly to the bar, the base of the LL4 is probably larger than the bar, so I would fabricate a “washer” to fit between the bar and the light for a more finished appearance. (You might be able...

    Junkyard find…..and a good one

First one I saw was a green bedazzled Whelen strobe mounted to a security pick up truck at Willow Lawn Shopping Center...early 90s.

Question about Twinsonic/Aerodynic/Code 3 speaker mounts and grilles

As a voluteer firefighter in KY, we could use red lights and siren when responding to an alarm. (The admonition was the vehicle had to be in complete control of the operator when proceeding through traffic, thus, if there was a collision, the vehicle was not under control and liable). One of my...

Question about Twinsonic/Aerodynic/Code 3 speaker mounts and grilles

In the Blues Brothers mall chase scene, the Illinois State police car 12X was mounted backwards with the speaker grill facing “forward”. (From FedSig’s instructions, the handclap pattern when viewed from front should be rotator flash followed by reflected flashes moving toward the center of the...

    Mount Rushmore of lightbar systems

I concur for the most part but I think the model 11 Twin BeaconRay is a light bar in that it is synchronized with a motorized and slave unit on a specially designed bar (modified VisiBar) with incredibly versatile mounting options for sirens. My $0.02.

    Mount Rushmore of lightbar systems

If I may be permitted a write in a candidate to Mt. Flashmore…the Mars Aurora Borealis. Well ahead of its time in terms of warning beacons—rotating or oscillating (side sweeps, traffic clearing and white cutouts). Its clockworks would make a Maytag repairman proud! (The red bulbs facing front...

    Mount Rushmore of lightbar systems

OK, gonna show my vintage…I cut my teeth (as an outfitter and user) on the FedSig model 11 & 12 so I am biased—best light bars ever (honorable mention to the AeroTwin realizing it’s a model 12 in an oval box). 1. You can’t beat a par 36 bulb for flash effect and candlepower. 2. It’s human...

    Whelen Centurion a deep dive

I love this forum for many reasons, primarily the preservation and display or early vehicular warning equipment. There is still some cool $#!t out there…and we are the stewards!! Having traversed the development of incandescent-halogen-strobe-and, oddly, the “VitaLite” rotator era of warning...

    Federal Junior 15 Question

Probably due to different filament alignment in the bulbs…check to see if one is aligned vertically or horizontally. I adapted one of mine to use a halogen bulb and had to adjust the alignment. Other than that, the bulb base may have changed slightly. Merry Christmas!

    Correct Mounting Feet

The first mounts were gutter mounts click here) then gutters started to go away on cars so FedSig went to this style They could be permanent or clamp style (bottom mount). The Aeros & JetSonics used a different style of clamp mount the clamp passed down through the middle of the foot. As...

    Whelen Remote Spotlight model 6500

My dads boat had one, but I’ve slept a few times since then. The controls were mounted in the dash (it was installed by the manufacture…Jeffboat, Jeffersonville, IN.) I only recall the power switch and the motion toggle.

That unit was a common marine light from the 60s utilized on pleasure craft of the era.

    Dietz Crossbar Question

The Dietz bar looks a lot like the Unity Uniracks…in fact the gutter clamps look very similar. Unity used round tubes whereas Dietz used square tubes. The Unirack had various plates to join the tubes together, so I imagine the Dietz bar would also. Just use whatever material the tubes are made...

    Old Whelen Power Supplies

Wow!! Amazing! I never would have noticed the subtle variations in the fluting without your drawing on the photo! So, on DMS domes, it’s easy to determine “Front”…it’s opposite of the notch for the power cord. I checked my other two domes (without labels) and they’re the same. Now, @RS485...

    Old Whelen Power Supplies

@JohnMarcson , I just finished watching your excellent and comprehensive history on Whelen’s Commander beacon posted on YouTube and I have a question about the directional reference (Front). On my blue DMS, the label is prominent as you can see, but the fresnel fluting does not appear to be...

Was This Ever A Twinsonic Factory Option?

Interesting point…FS did accommodate special requests for sizable markets (NYPD 175-H and AeroTwin, Honolulu 174-H, and of course CTS). And the CP series speakers were far more profitable than the TS speakers. I would love to see a FS bulletin. Plastic speaker trays were used in later...

    Hoping someone can help

I had another thought. As @NPS Ranger said, it’s very robust and a very good custom fabrication to mount on the alternator bracket bolted to the engine block. Another possibility is a brake booster as I believe a 57 may have been hydraulic assist instead of air. (Schnikey! That would have been...

    Hoping someone can help

With the enormous external mounting options for sirens and/or speakers on a Maxim, I would be surprised to see a speaker mounted under the hood, even if the hard suction hose was wrapped across the nose (ala Louisville Fire Dept.). Perhaps an exhaust whistle occupied that space (even though...

    Federal Signal Pulsator P660 S

I like your idea of a very economical finish in a good chrome rattle can spray paint. I never saw the guts of a pulsator but I understand the basic concept was a flap that opened/closed to restrict air intake to the siren causing it to “pulsate” (you can do the same thing by putting a book over...

    Federal Signal Pulsator P660 S

The bolt you see is the power (12VDC +). Use a battery cable and ground it (-) with the mounting foot (where it would have been bolted to roof/fender/bumper). The power cable should be routed through the mounting foot. The rear motor housing is the same size as the FedSig Q2 series (it was...
