British-made Standard 10 evaluated by Chicago PD

Back in the mid-1950s CPD evaluated a British "Standard 10" estate (station wagon) for police use.

FYI: The City of London, also known as the Square Mile, is a distinct jurisdiction within Greater London. The Houses of Parliament, Number 10 and the Royal palaces are in the adjacent City of Westminster and are policed by the Metropolitan Police.

A photo of a preserved Nottingham City Fire Brigade appliance. It entered service in 1940, and you'll notice that the vehicle was equipped with a mechanical siren. At the time Nottingham City was unique in Britain for using sirens rather than bells on all its emergency vehicles..

There is a popular misconception that until the introduction of the two-tone airhorn Britain was a land that resonated purely to the tinkle of the Winkworth Gong. While that may have been true in London, other cities and towns did things rather differently. Here is a newsreel piece from around...

One of the very earliest examples of a lightbar in use by a UK (Gloucestershire) police force. Some Chief Constables were very much against the introduction what they considered to be a too American-look, and sound, to their fleets...

    BMW e60 amber install

Why ruin a great car with a Whacker set-up? :hopeless: If you really must be a knight of the road invest a few dollars in an amber throw light that can spend its days tucked away in the boot (trunk).

    FedSig New Product - 04.10.14

This product reminds of the washing machines that have dozens of programme (UK spelling!) settings and you end-up using only a handful of them. Pointless; needless complication and expense. :duh:

When is too many lights to many?

Here in the UK vehicle owners have to inform their insurers if they make any significant modification to a vehicle. Failure to get the insurer's approval can result in cover being invalid. I'm amazed that (in a litigation-happy country) US insurers don't prevent the installation of such...

    Winter Park Tiller

What a ridiculous piece of "design". A European manufacturer could supply a turntable ladder appliance in a package a fraction the size of that behemoth: particularly for a low-rise, residential town like Winter Park.

    CHP going to Harley's

So CHP are still not ATGATT (all the gear all the time) when it comes to protective clothing for their motorbike officers. They may look "cool", but shirtsleeves on a motorbike? They must be crazy. :bonk:

London & Ireland Sirens and Travel Costs

When, back in the early 1980s, the Metropolitan Police began the switch from air horns and the ridiculous Winkworth Gongs they specified siren tones that did not sound too American. Hence the raspy Met. tones.

Columbus Police PI SUV Freeway Patrol

From the other side of the pond with some words of advice. 1: gold lettering on a white background???? You need high contrast to make it as legible as possible. 2: we always equip the rear of our vehicles with high visibility/reflective chevrons to improve daytime and nightime conspicuity...

    4 Q's, 4 888's and a roto-ray!!!!

He had an interesting sense of humour. I wonder if the city's insurers would share the joke if a claim came in based on 1: the fire department's vehicles are painted black rather than a recognised safety colour and 2: the confusion caused by the sheer number of warning lights on their vehicles...

    4 Q's, 4 888's and a roto-ray!!!!

The reason FDMH's rigs are black is because Chuck reasoned (back in the early '80's when red vs. slime was still a subject of debate) that he never heard of a black colored fire engine getting in a wreck. FDMH calls the color "Safety Black" Flawed logic from the chief of the MHFD. If no one...

I count 32 light heads on the rear of that vehicle. Would someone explain how it is that other drivers manage not to drive into the back of it when only the OEM brake, turn and tail lights are in use. Rather than enhancing safety such a plethora of blinkies only causes confusion and distraction.

    Too many lights cause accidents....

That's why British-style reflective chevrons on the rear of vehicles are so effective. Imagine a huge expanse of red and yellow that glows whenever it's caught by the light from an approaching vehicle's headlights. No danger of dazzle at night and far less likely to cause rubber-necking...

    Awesome squad!

John Q Taxpayer certainly gets ripped-off when it comes to paying for fire protection. Thirty fire stations to serve a city of about half a million: ridiculous. This side of The Pond fire stations have been closed and the number of fire appliances reduced because there has been a huge decrease...
