    Wanted Code 3 LP6000 parts

Been busy the last couple days - apologies for the delay. I do have two StingRays with modules. I tested them recently and they seemed OK. I have oodles of amber filters so I'm not looking for any more in trade. I do have several red and blue filters that snap fit on rotators & stationary...

    Wanted Code 3 LP6000 parts

I don't have a clear center, but I have a pair of LP Stingrays and might have some colored filters.

    Wanted LP6000 Filters and Stingrays

I have a pair of NOS Stingrays (not in original boxes) and some half cylinder LP filters in amber & red. I’d been meaning to build a beacon using one or both of the Stingrays (for a very long time) and just never got around to it. Tested them a few months ago and they worked fine in all...

    2009 impala lighting questions

I worked for ADOT 1986-2016. I specified and built lights only for my group (Traffic), which is only one area of a very large agency. If ADOT Equipment Services ever installed an Aerodynic on an Impala, then that wasn't anything I was involved in. And all the LPs I built for that group are...

SOLD Pair of Amber Tuff-Bilt 7-07 Beacons - Used, Good Condition

I'm still in discussions with Mars Light regarding overseas shipping and payment, but if that falls through, they will be available.

Apologies for the delay in replying. Yes, they're still available. Let me look into shipping options and I'll get back with you.

    Code 3 AS2

AS2s typically didn’t have a built-in flasher (I used them for warning and S-T-T on my truck in the early 90s). The three wires are hot for one bulb, hot for the other bulb, and common ground.

SOLD Pair of Amber Tuff-Bilt 7-07 Beacons - Used, Good Condition

$50 each plus shipping. I’ll be traveling June 18 - July 18, so I won’t be able to ship during that time.

SOLD Pair of Amber Tuff-Bilt 7-07 Beacons - Used, Good Condition

I have a pair of Tuff-Bilt LOL-LL (rotates beacon 180°) er, 7-07 teardrop magnetic beacons with amber domes, coil cords, and 12V plugs in good condition. These use the Fireball-style teardrop dome (narrower than the "1166-style" dome). They both work fine (roller drives in good shape, bright...

    Well cost me $20

Remarkable deal. The 550 beacon is just about the best single-rotator beacon out there, and the LP beacons are great too.

    Softlights.org vs. Vehicle Lighting

While reviewing comments on the new draft of the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) dealing with traffic signs, signals, markings, and other devices, I came across a comment from a group called "Soft Lights". The mission statement on their website reads: "We are citizens...

Well, I'm done with code 3 products,

25 years ago, Code 3 was great. Any part, even down to #8 SS screws in a specific length - just look up the number and they'll ship it thru your dealer (for a substantial markup, but hey, at least they had it in stock at the factory on Warson). Seems like things have changed, but not for the...

The 4416R is officially out of production.

I still have two 4416Rs in my PAR36 box. One's in very good shape and the other has wear/scratching on the peak of the lens.

Testing Light Visibility - Bright Sunlight

The Magnabeams on the right of each vehicle are about two decades old. They’re set at the “high” flash rate. Even though they’ve been well-maintained, I’ve found at that age that if you set the speed on “slow”, there’s a possibility that the motor can stop completely, which is a Bad Thing.

    Michigan Fire Trucks: Red/Blue Lights

Another sign of the Apocalypse? :) I've live in Arizona all my life, but started regularly driving across the US about 20+ years ago. In AZ, emergency services run red/blue all directions + white & amber. But it was initially surprising to see all-blue in some areas, as it didn't match my...

Testing Light Visibility - Bright Sunlight

Regarding the stationary light: over the years, as Magnabeams (some of which were used in light bars) conked out (typically due to burned-out motors or chewed-up gears), they'd get dismantled and tossed into a parts pile for fixing survivors. Inspired by a recent posting here by dmathieu, I...

Testing Light Visibility - Bright Sunlight

Sure, almost any light looks great up close at night or in an indoor garage. But how does it look in bright sunlight at 1/4 mile away? At 75 mph, 1/4 mile is a mere 12 seconds. Having lights visible at that distance or farther could be useful out on streets and highways. Yesterday, I took my...

From 1993: My old Arizona DOT vehicle

When this vehicle was turned in in 1998 and replaced with a Taurus, we took the XL rotators and the FB3/UF7s and stuffed them in a old gutted Yankee bar with clear domes. That worked until we discovered the UF7s don't like being in a greenhouse in the Arizona sun. :)

From 1993: My old Arizona DOT vehicle

While I was going through old videotapes, I found a short video from 1993 of my old Arizona DOT vehicle with its lights operating. The car was a 1987 Chevrolet Celebrity (not one of GM's finest products). It had a removable Code 3 XL 5100 beacon with a clear lens and amber filters on top, and a...

Found a better image in my files of the LP refurbs we did in ADOT - I must have done this for one of those "show off your group's cost-saving achievements" back then.

    Split Dome Beacons

Speaking of easy-peasy split-doming: here’s the side-firing red/amber FB4 Magnabeam I have mounted in the rear window of my “jellybean” Yaris. This is the only FB4 of mine I’ve set up side-flashing - for some reason, this unit just isn’t happy in end-flash mode.

    Split Dome Beacons

For years, Arizona DOT used to have split-dome LP 6105 and Highlighter beacons on construction and maintenance vehicles. They'd mount a pair of beacons on the headache rack or an aluminum bar, and have a amber front / red rear on the left and an all-amber on the right. I think Equipment Services...

    Oldie sort of

Phoenix PD stuck with LPs for a very long time (long after many other agencies went LED) - typically 47"s with red / blue domes plus a clear-dome center light section set up white front / half-cyl amber rear (think it was a fast rotator, not a StingRay) - as shown in the photos above. The Parks...

Here's one when I was visiting our neighbors to the east in 2002 for an I-40 project coordination meeting. Here's the old Traffic Design fleet at the Jack Rabbit Trading Post in 2010 when we were up there for field location work as part of a sign replacement project. All the LP bars are ex-DPS...

On the rear, the outward facing downward diagonal pattern is a standard object marker pattern used on traffic control devices for decades, used in NFPA 1901, and becoming more prevalent in all types of response vehicles (I did a survey within AASHTO on the topic several years ago). Colors are...
