It’s all this time on my hands (4” rain this week!), I thought I would tackle the noisy motor on my blue glass domed 174. In the back of my mind, I was trying to remember just what is involved. as I got the gearbox cover off I remembered...oh yea, you have to disassemble the entire beacon! Oh bother. But while I had the gearbox cover off, I thought I would take some pics for our curious members: As you can see, it’s packed in pretty tight I there.
This is the dwell cycle where the cam is over the motor shaft.
This is the sweep cycle where the cam is furthest from the motor worm gear.
And a video:
Whilst I was at it, I ran the serial numbers through @stansdds excellent serial number decoder and discovered why the blue 174 is so noisy...its S/N is from August 1958–the year the 174 was introduced! I‘m the same “vintage“ and I make more noise than that!
Enjoy!
