This is an SD-70 A-38W speaker. It has an unusual metal bell. It's missing the cone tag so not sure who made it. Looks like my federal drivers. The round bell is unusual to me. What are your thoughts. Was this mounted in a bumper or is this for a motorcycle? Or ?
My guess is that it is the inner parts of an Atlas Sound HPR-70C speaker.
That speaker has a chrome plated outer housing but with a shorter black painted inner bell and a black painted cone.
I guess that someone took out the Atlas Sound SD-70 driver together with the inner parts and made some kind of home build speaker.
Here are two photos of the original brochure.
Unfortunatly the HPR-70C I have in my collection is difficult for me to get hold of at the moment so I am not able to take any photo of it.
But it might be as easy as you said previously, Skulldigger, that it is the inner parts of a Federal CP-25 speaker.
I am not sure but the parts on that speaker might even be originally made by Atlas Sound.
Why should Federal have made their own parts when they could easily bought the parts from Atlas Sound.
They bought the Atlas Sound SD-70 driver so why not buy everything they needed to lower their cost?
Then a CP25 it is! The horns are the same for a 25 or 100. Here's one of mine...an early series with the chrome cone cap (say that fast three times).
The bolt extension on the back of the driver goes through the rear of the chrome hone and is secured by an acorn nut.
Cool. Wish it still had the chrome housing but then it would have cost me more than $10. Lol. I'm going to put a wide bell on it and mount it into my Aerotwin.
