Career Change

Well after 7 years of working for the Goshen County Sheriff's Office I decided it was time for a change of pace. Starting Feb. 18,2013 I will start my new position of Port of Entry specialist for the Wyoming Highway Patrol. My plan is to work there for 3-4 years and get all of my commercial vehicle certifications and then move into a trooper position.

Best of luck to you in your new path!! I have more than likely been through the port of entry that you will be working. I hope it gets you closer to that Trooper spot you want.

Is this a sworn position? Are the trooper spots that difficult to come by, that it requires years of cultivation? Either way, good luck, when I tried to start with the Sheriff's Office here, they wanted 5 years of experience, so I ended up in a local City until I became a "known" individual, and made some connections. I'm sure it helped to pave the way.

These positions are not sworn. They do have the power to issue citations if needed. A trooper position is not hard to get but it will look better for me to have experience as a POE specialist when the time comes for me to test. The WHP has troopers that their main job is weights and scales so this will be good to have.

What exactly is a Port of Entry specalist? Is that like a weigh station entering the state or something?

Yes as a POE specialist you weigh trucks and make sure they are compliant, and they can also do inspections as well.

Just a personal note here but i when I was OTR, there was never a time that I passed through WY that the scales weren't open. There was always someone home to check paperwork and permits.

The port that I am going to be working at is not manned 24/7. I believe they are open 5-6 days a week and are closed by 2100.

Just a quick update. Well as it turns out after a few months working there I have found out that this job is not for me. I know it looks bad that I only worked there for a few months, but you have to do what you love. I got hired back at the Sheriff's Office that I use to work at so I will be starting there again on April 26th.

Been there, done that. Sometimes the best laid plans don't pan out. It's all for the best, though. If you don't feel right after some time passes, it just isn't what you were meant to do, in most cases. Gotta give ya credit for giving it a shot, though! You never want to be in the position of "should-a, would-a, could-a". You have to do what's best for you and your family. Best of luck, Nick!

Same thing happened to me just a few months ago. Left a job aftef 10 years for a new one with a contractor up at the local AFB. Within one week I realized it wasn't right for me. Stuck it out for a month then left. Was out of work for 2 months and then found my current gig, which I love. Come to find out, the contractor lost the contract, so I would have lost my job anyway. Everything happens for a reason.
