I could give you a couple names of EMS contracting services overseas. SRCA (Saudi Red Crescent) is one, and I know the George Washington University also contracts EMS personnel for work overseas....

Thanks guys, but I'm really looking for companies that are based overseas and do Rural/Metro Fire type contracts. Such as cities and areas not covered by a city service, not military contracts and Iraq type contracts

Bechtel Inc.

Boeing

Singer

Wackenhut

Xzee (Blackwater)

Halliburton

Executive Protective Services

Most petro-chemical comoanies

DOW Chemical

Just a few that come to mind from when I was

in the DoD Fire Service and interacted with some

of them.

Most of them are the same as private security contractors.

Usual work-shift is 30 days in-country, 2 weeks home.

But this varies now due to level of danger (combat),

friendliness of the country with us, culture, etc.

Some contactors in friendly countries, have you deploy

for more extended periods as you can easily mix with

the locals. Salary is VERY good, benefits are generally

VERY good, housing allowances, etc. Some are NOT

"accompanied" (no dependents, see above reasons)

and some even confine you to a particular area or

compound. Equipment varies from lousy/local to really

good US apparatus and PPE.

Language barriers and local codes, customs and practices

to overcome and get used to. (When in Rome, do as the

Romans do...) On some US-controlled places you get to

function the same as if you were back home.

Contracts range from 6 months to 3 years and are renewable.

Most times, wages earned outside the US are not considered

taxable. But again, this varies with the contract language and

conditions of employment.

Work experience such as this used to be VERY helpful when

seeking employment in paid departments in the US. Now, I

don't think so much.

Helpful?

Most overseas FDs are an arm of the State or Military

of that country. Thus the FDs are usually nationalized.

Not many contractors. Some countries DO have VFDs!

Germany, Finland, Australia, etc. But even most of

those answer to a National Fire Service entity.

For instance Japan's Fire Service is nationalized.

Most overseas large cities/metro areas have large

all-paid fire services such as the London Fire Brigade,

Berlinische Fuerwher (sp?), etc.

Best advice is google around, check various fire service

websites (Youngstownfire.com is a good one) and take

copious notes!

Plus....You'll get to see all of the different types of apparatus

and lighting/warning systems used!

Red Adair Service & Marine Company (Now a part

of another company, I think it was sold.)

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Adair in 1992 when

he was at the base I was at doing some research

demos for the Naval Research Lab and we (FD) did

the standbys for them. He spent some time at our

station and told us a few "war stories"! TRULY an

interesting man! Part of the "Greatest Generation".

International Well Control (the old Boots & Coots)

which I think is now part of either Blackwater (XZee) or

Halliburton. Also got to meet Mr. Asger Hansen ("Boots"

of "Boots & Coots").
