ususally the A3 models had the large beacon ray motor, the A3A had the flat sided (series 1) motor and the A4 had the round (series 3) motor. again usually the A3 and A3A had the full back enclosed lampholders and the A4 had the skeletal ones

The Series A3A was a transitional version that was produced over a four year period. It introduced a number of changes in motors and lamp holder assemblies. From my research:

184 Power series A3A 1976-1980
Original Beacon Ray 176 type motors 1976-77
Series 1 and Series 2 motor 77-78
Skeletonized lamp holders late 1978
Series 3 motors 1979-80
