Federal Signal Vista SL Patterns Not Changing

Hello, I acquired a federal signal vista SL and i'm trying to change the flash patterns but when i follow the manuals instructions to short the wire, i apply the opposite polarity and nothing happens. I may just be stupid and not doing it properly but the manual is confusing to me.
Anyone know if it could be a wiring issue or just my stupidity

You change the patterns by momentarily connecting the paired pattern wires together. I'm not exactly sure what you're saying about "applying opposite polarity"... but don't do that.

I was literally connecting a negative to a positive, hopefully I didn't fry anything I knew it was my stupidity
