I'm no fireman. Can someone please enlighten me on this naming convention of one side is A, then I believe it goes clockwise (left is B, back is C, right side is D, etc.- if 8 sided=use more letters). How is the A side determined? Always faces the street? Always the "main" entrance (some building you couldn't tell)? Always determined by the preplan? Thanks in advance.

The front is considered Side A, and it goes clockwise from there. Typically determined by the side facing the street, which usually also has the front door, but obviously there could be situations where it could be ambiguous I guess.

It's been a problem on some of our fires in the past. We have a subdivision where some homes on a corner have a street address of the major street, but the house's entrance is on the side street..

in the ambiguous situations, I think A usually ends up being whichever side command gets placed, from what I've seen ...

Ive also seen it done where the A side is the "mailbox" side of the structure.
