Look at the door on the Hearse. There is a governmental type seal on there. I could be wrong, but I am wondering if the SUV is part of a security escort detail. But I can't really tell the color of the lights on the SUV.

You are wrong as that is their logo, not government seal. The lights on the SUV are white.

I don't have an issue with purple lights on funeral vehicles, as purple is designated for funerals. The sirens however is a whole other issue, and should not be allowed. If you have a police escort as is fairly common around here they take care of that. There's no reason funeral cars should have sirens.

We do funeral escorts every day. If one of the detectives is involved they use their slick tops. In some states (Florida when I was there) the funeral escorts were on days-off paying either overtime or straight pay from the funeral home. Not uncommon to drive code during a funeral escort especially if there are 100 cars, two cops and 50 intersections to bust. Purple is used in MS as well.

Just my 2 cents.

We used to have to catch intersections and have units lead/follow the vehicle's at funerals all the time at my old department. I was never a fan since I would rather be patrolling, but it is what it is. The only thing that really got me upset about it was the fact the companies charged families around $600 for the police escort and they pocketed 100% of it.

I also remember almost getting t-boned by an SUV who blew a red light while running a single strobe purple dash light (no police escort, btw), then flipped me off. I kind of wish he had hit me so I could be the proud owner of a funeral company now...

The dead person must of been a real prick and the family wanted to get him in the ground quick... maybe he rose from the dead once before and the family did not want that to happen again.

Maybe he was trying to drum up some new business and he was pissed at you for not obliging him. LOL

Three things:

1. The lights on the SUV look clear to me.

2. Like the little purple Whelen Cadet CR-212 on the impala, got one just like it.

3. Nice clean looking Cadillac Federal Coach Heritage hearse.

All the Funeral cars i have seen down here have lights on them so i dont see an issue with it. But they are usually followed and escorted by some sort of LEO not just alone like that on the video. Still think it looks cool though.

Never understood why funeral home vehicles need lights of any color. I've always found that the little flags or window stickers that say Funeral combined with headlights and four ways was always enough to get my attention.

Here in Iowa the funeral escorts use red and amber with a siren most are LEO with POVs but not all. I do them and am not a LEO. However we only use sirens when we need them if at all. At least in the city I live in The police Dept. wont do them. They dont have the man power to do escorts. That leaves us. the company I work for dose at least 10 per week. If we lived in the country flags and head lights might do it but not in the city. Also state law mandates a funeral escort for each funeral. Most are done with 2 cars. Also please dont judge everyone buy the actions of some. THANK YOU :)

Ive been in a funeral procession before where the funeral home simply didnt have enough "FUNERAL" flags. Those who didnt get one, were stuck with hazards and headlights. In Ohio, the funeral procession gets to proceed through the red lights. Its great to have an escort.

Though we were in GA for a second. A couple weeks ago came across a escort with two motorcycles with KO white light and sirens. The dumbass was in ON coming traffic (playing chicken) to get vehicles to stop, IDK why when they had alot of room to go by.

Taking a body to the cemetery isn't an emergency. Bad idea in my opinion. It certainly wouldn't fly in my area.

Agreed !!

...but on a less serious note: it´s a good businessplan; create lots of unecessary dangerous situations in the traffic, wear down peoples respect for sirens and flashing lights, and you´ll have a never ending supply of "customers"....

Ok the car had a purple light, but the SUV I'm not so sure could have been an unmarked LEO? I agree there is no emergency but if they can tie up traffic for 2 minutes as apposed to 5 or 10 and it's a LEO then it's his or her call to keep things moving. Just my 2 centavos. :D

personally, I'd be pissed if i had someone w/ purple lights and a smart siren blaring behind me. as for the horn, it sounds like a moving car alarm...maybe the old dude jacked the impala and thinks he can hide in procession w/ the cadet up top...JK!

i don't think there's a reason for siren use here (whoever is in the suburban) and if LE is doing an escort, I personally think they should only be doing it in marked units, but that's just me.

I'll bet that the SUV was an unmarked police vehicle, but I don't see why a siren is needed for a funeral escort.

Been beat to death here already. I'll say this - I like the fact for funeral escorts. People are grieving and may not be in their best frame of mind. It is not my position to say if they should be driving or not. However, if you can lump them together and control their speed you could effectively increase the safety of the procession. So my opinion is this, IF state law allows it, AND the driver is trained AND they are driving in a safe consistent manner then I see no problem. There is not point to be driving in oncoming lanes or driving over the posted speed limit. In fact they should probably be driving under the limit in most cases.

As for the original point of this post, if that SUV had Purple lights those were some crappy lights. Absolutely no punch thru of the tint.

I agree...things like this really piss me off. These are the people who can't become cops or firefighters because they do shit like this. And then they wonder why....

Weird escort procedure. In KY, up until last year there was some confusion as to what color lights could be used. The legislature finally updated the law by saying that red, blue and amber could be used in any combination of the three to do funeral escort. This refers to the funeral homes discretion. Police or fire does not always escort for the procession. My friend who owns a funeral home has told me it can be very hard getting through intersections without them. I know of volunteer ff being drafted by the funeral home to escort if they are going to the cemetary. Processions here do have the right of way and can go against red should they approach an intersection with red stop light. Also, it is law that all traffic the procession is passing or meeting is to pull over and give then the right of way. When police are escorting, they usually just use the air horn but do not block the intersection as the procession pass through. As for flags, they don't use them because they fall off the cars or the people forget to give them back to the funeral homes. All the other cars in the procession just use highbeams and 4 ways.
