H1 vs the 795 bulbs

I've always marveled at the reasoning behind the H1 series bulbs and the 795 series bayonet bulbs. Now I know the filament for the 795x provided better light by repositioning the filament, but the h1 only provides 5 watts more output. Was this a sales gimmick? a way to introduce another platform for competition? Or was this a simple a supply chain issue supplying 795 795x bulbs?

I believe H1 started in Europe, Osram in the early 1970s. The top Filament support was on the outside of the bulb. This was their design. The 795 and 795X came out later. Filaments were positioned re bulb position in reflector need.

Well that's interesting, were the 795 and 795x created by the same manufacturer? I honestly don't see why the US wouldn't have adopted the H1 early on. I mean, I know that Mercedes cars headlights weren't adopted in the US due to the sealed beam standard, but this seems outside that scope.
