Help me light up my ATV

Well, I almost got hit at the end of my driveway while plowing the other day. No fault but my own...I was in the roadway at night.

Anyways, I want some advice on how to light up my ATV. I want amber....thinking some form of pole with a LED beacon up top. Don't want to do wig wags or turn it into a "wackermobile". Would love something that can be removed when not plowing.

Ideas? Suggestions? Here is my ATV

Price is a cheap as possible while still being effective :)

Thanks for the comments. It is a 2001 Polaris 500 HO. Bought it in 2006 with 12 miles (yup...12 miles) on it from an older gentleman who never used it. Oh yeah....got it for $2000.00 with the plow and winch!!!!!!

Have a pic? I'm not sure how I would mount a pole to the ATV

You could mount it to the rear rack using a clamp and also clamp around the pole from the rear box you have on the ATV (as long as you don't mind screwing into it). That should make it sturdy enough.

What about a Sound Off 4500 Series LED beacon?

I'd add some amber pimp pods to the rear and sides of the cargo box, too. I'd assume that's where you need the most protection. Maybe TIR3 to the sides and TIR4 or TIR6 to the rear?

To me that is heading down the "wackertastic" route. I am thinking more and more about a pole beacon

Yep, simple and 360 degree visibility.

That is the goal...just don't want to get smashed up at the end of my driveway. Now what size pole? Where do I get one? Never done anything like this before

Go to you local hardware store. You know, you could just mount it to the box in the back on a corner. It may not be completly 360 degrees but it would give you rear warning. Also, if you are not trying to look like a wacker, after thinking about it, i think mounting some pimp pods would be better. they are not noticable when they are off and when they are on they have a great punch. A Pole mounted light will look more "wacktastic" in my oppinon. just my $0.02 :D

hope i helped

Epoxy or rivet a little steel plate to the top of the rear yellow cargo cabinet, the kind of little plate that comes with halogen dashlights for instance. Then put your choice of LED/strobe/halogen mag mount beacon there, run it to a cig socket wired to the battery. That way the light will be easily removable, will be behind you so it won't blind you at night, and won't be on a pole to hit trees or get bashed.

My code three is surface mounted, not pole mounted, The only picture I currently have is when it had a Walmart type revolving light. since changed to the Code 3

just a suggestion but on my old headache rack on my peterbilt i had 2 pieces of black pipe from home depot mounted on there with small U bolts and a pole mount strobe mounted on top and run the wiring right down the inside of the pipe to a power source maybe something you can put together off your rear rack I had 5 foot pieces but they go all the way down to a few inches. this worked great and was removable in a minute or 2

If you want a pole light with a single rotatory light, how about mounting 2 or 3, or make your own, of something like this:

on the back, or side, of your rear pod. Drill a hole through the sides and through the pipe so you can insert a clevis pin to hold in place. This would keep the mount clear of snow, ice and dirt/mud so you didn't have to clean it out every time you wanted to use it. Power could easily be a 2-pole connector normally kept inside the rear pod.

I use a Star single flash pole mounted strobe for me. Just have it mounted to the rear rack with a few hose clamps and a quick disconnect to remove it after winter. All done less than $100. This was mounted on a '86 Honda Big Red ATC250ES of course. (thats right folks a three wheeler with a plow)!

I'd go with a single tir6 at the rear of the box and tir3's on the side as well as on the hand shields. In the front you have the three lights and with the pods on the protectors, you get side and front warning. Also keep in mind that any front lighting needs to be higher than the plow when its up. I'm not crazy about the pole, it could get in the way. Where I live people ride on the side of the road and outside plowing season, you'll have the lights there for some insurance while riding.

If you're going to be out in the snow, will build up of snow, ice, etc. be a problem on the beacon? Would a halogen rotator work better for keeping the snow and ice melted?

Thanks to all for the feedback. I've decided to go with 4 TIR style LED's in amber mounted on the front and rear boxes angled outward to give 360 degree warning. I toyed with the idea of a pole mounted light but I think the LED's will be arond the same price and provide better visability.

I will post some pics/video when I am done.

Why not use linear lights instead of TIR style? Since your going to be mounting them at an angle, linear will give you greater head on from the front and rear so you'll have great 360 degree protection.

this is my personal wheeler. 2008 polaris 500 this is the 2nd one iv added lights to. it has 8 911ep led stars and a ls12. led stars are on the front bumper on each side. in the front grill by the winch. side of the rear rack, rear of the rear rack, ls12 is above the lic plate. i liked it this way as there always on there and there not in the way. pole mounts are nice but being the racks are only plastic and the light being that high it may brake the rack.
