Thanks guys. Yeah, the pic obviously was a small snapshot shared on facebook. The reason I'm interested in this particular one is that I've never seen a photo of the cars back then with anything other than the Beacon Ray 17. Must have been testing this light for possible purchase.

Looks like a Tripp-Lite RF-64, 4 sealed beam PAR46.
But closer look, it doesn't look that large, maybe just a Tripp- Lite RF-6.
Not the greatest picture.
Dan, do you have any reference photos of those lights?

Found some pics here on the site

It look, as said, as a Tripp-Lite RF-6 but it look as three sealed beams.

If I do not recall wrong it was a RF-63 with three sealed beams once.

It might also be four sealed beams and a light that had a very similar design as the Tripp-Lite RF series was Dazl-Ray DR-C 24, if I not remember the model number wrong.

All are possibilities. I wish we could sharpen the picture.

cmb56, you're correct on the Mars RB being 1954. In 1955-56 Whelen came out with the Rota-Beam RB10 which was the same model number of one of Mars' lights. Whelen quickly changed their RB10 to RB11, which it retained for 36 years until it was discontinued in 1992

It definitely looks like a Tripp Lite RF-63 to me. The big 12 inch diameter Tripp Lites didn't come about until the late 1960s, early 1970s.

But! It could also be a Do-Ray 4004 as well. Here's a FB video of one.

I think the Tripp and the Do-Ray are both possibilities. All of the Tacoma cars at the time were Beacon Ray equipped. I am almost sure this is a one-off light in the fleet. The Department historian has never seen that style light in any of the photos he has or has seen. It may continue to be a mystery.

I know who was driving the car, where the car was when the photo was taken, and who the cowboy in front of the car is. The cowboy became a Tacoma officer and is now retired!
