Mars FL8 Manufacture Date

Mike,

I have a very good source that can probably provide a fairly close proximation (his grandmother, the wife of the founder of Mars, recorded all sales manually in ledgers, but they’re long gone) …what’s the number?

Bummer, but there's no magic decoder ring or online database where you can just type in a Mars FL8 serial number and instantly get a build date. The mars signal light company didn't use a structured date code hidden in their serial numbers like a lot of other companies did.

Mike,

My contact estimates mid to late 40’s as he states “it predates my oldest by 1500 lights.” Not sure what that means exactly, but given that these were introduced in 1936, this is probably a pretty educated guess. From what I can see in the picture, it looks to be in pretty decent shape. Does it work?

Marc,

Thanks for finding that out for me!

Yes, it works great. Got it last weekend with some antique fire equipment. The guy asked if I wanted the "red light" as well but he was unaware if it worked or not. Of course I said sure!
