Motor cap/bearing question (from Jet, Twinsonic, Aerodynic)

Wondering when they started and stopped using the cap with the ballbearing on the back of the motor shaft?

I can see how it keeps the shaft from moving in and out during operation (a lot of noise from small motors like the ones on the MX comes from the shaft hitting the travel limits at a very rapid pace). I have only seen one or two motors with that cap out of the dozens I have come across over the years. This makes me wonder how important they really are.

I have one on a Jetsonic. I have greased the ball twice over the years but it is getting noisy again. I do not have a good punch to reattach the cap after greasing it and eventually it will be deformed enough to no longer stay on.

Have not been able to find much of anything on them during searches so I figured I would reach out and see who knows what.
