Picked this up on ebay for a $15 bid, listed as a Rooftop emergency light. The owner previous to the seller is no longer with us so they had no information about the beacon.

No markings on the amber plastic dome
No tag on the base but the holes are there.
Base is painted grey inside from factory
Base is painted black on the outside, no sign of former chrome
12 volt bulbs, 6volt motor marked CTOK,
16655 and 6V in yellow paint.
No other numbers on the unit.
Any idea what I have here?
Thanks!

Model 17 was available with paint, no chrome. Hammered finish gray paint. Black is user painted (badly). Light was 6 V, but 12 V bulbs added, probably for use on 12 V system. If used on 12 V, probably spun like a bugger for as long as the motor lasts. Looks like a newer larger dome version.

Looking at the motor and the extra plate for mounting, it could be an older 6 volt insides with a newer skirt and dome. The dual plate for mounting I have only on one of my 17's and it's the 1956 6 volt model. That 6 volt motor will run under 12 volts but twice as fast. As long as it doesn't over heat your fine. Say display with short runs vs on a classic car with long runs in variable temps. These older motors were built like bricks and can handle the load. I put converters on all of my 6volt stuff so they run as designed. Just don't want to take the chance. 20170827_181828_LLS.jpg

The standard mounting was no lower plate. If I remember correctly, the smaller lower plate was used on the 17D demountable model. There would have been a bolt with a wire through hole mounted in the center of the plate. This bolt was easily removed for other mounting.
The plate in the OP's pic looks, to me, like a user added larger full diameter mounting plate., not a smaller demountable plate.

I as referring to the second top plate that holds the bearing for the light shaft. Not standard on later models. The smaller plate (left in my pic) sits atop the regular plate and is held with screws. It's only purpose, on the early lights was to hold the bearing as best I can tell. The light Fireglen shows has that same smaller plate on top.

Skulldigger I just read your thread on restoring your 6v model. Nice post. My light looks like its pretty much the same as yours. I have decided to stay with the hammered metal paint on the skirt. I can’t find a photo of one that style but the paint inside the skirt is still intact so I have something to go on.
Anyone have a clear dome for these lights? I have seen them for the 174,175,176 models. Would that be the same size needed?
Thanks for the advice guys!

Dmathieu, It’s running about 96fpm on 12v
