New Pics On Page 3

Our Sheriff recently decided that he was gonna start a Canyon Patrol due to the call volume they've been having. Our deputies are also paramedics and carry a lot of gear as it is, in their Exploder's. But the new Canyon Patrol guys are gonna have twice that amount so they bought two new tahoes to give them the room. I've been training 4 deputies for the last three months on High Angle and vertical rescue but they'll also be doing drug interdiction and underage drinking enforcement. So I got to give them some input on their lighting and while I had a lot more scene lighting in mind I think they did an OK job. This first one is just a cell phone pic but I will snap photos of both of them from front to rear and inside and out in the next week or so.

Nice looking vehicle, to say the least. So they will be both EMT and law enforcement, that's a heavy burden for those four men. Hope they are well paid.

Actually 90% of the 100 + deputies are paramedics. Only a handful are not (usually special services or DARE) and they don't get to do regular patrol.

very nice the winch on the front of a patrol unit is different, did they ever consider a 1 ton pickup with a cap with a slide tray and organizer just for the canyon patrol guys, they can handle more weight and carry more equipment then a tahoe :?:

They did look into it but I think it came down to the availability of a 1/4 prisoner partition

My Search & Rescue deputies are issued full size pickups. Most are EMT-Is. They carry high ankle and other technical rescue gear. They have a slide out drawer & a truck box inside the bed. They also patrol the 'hard to reach' places to enforce human and drug smuggling. They also could be considered the SWAT team of the desert.

(This photo was taken up in the Payson, AZ area around Christmas for some winter training)

God I wish I could have been issued a Tahoe instead of the Explorer....

I would be happy with something other than an Impala. How do you like the Explorer as a general patrol vehicle?

Thats a nice Tahoe.

Most of your deputies being medics, is the EMS just BLS trucks, who if need be a deputy will jump on as the ALS? Or are the deputies just ALS to stabilize the pt. while EMS is attempting to find them in the canyon?

No, all the deputies are paramedics with ALS cert's. They do a lot more than just the canyons and remote parts of the county. Often they run side by side with a lot of the bigger cities Fire Deptartment ambulances. All the Fords can radar and do traffic enforcement, some are SWAT or Bomb Techs. Quite a few of the guys moonlight with the Air Med and Life Flight ships as flight medics. They carry tons of equipment and drugs in their explorers. The canyon patrol boys actually just got a variance to carry even more drugs in their packs than usual due to some of the extraction times on difficult rescues.

Here's some pics from previous threads ....

Ehh...it's ok. My old CVPI (2001) had more interior room and better pickup, of course. My Durango ran like a raped ape but went through wheel bearings every 20K miles, and still had more interior room and handled better.

I don't do a lot of traffic enforcement so I don't need super-rapid acceleration, but this 6 cylinder stuff is crap compared to an 8. And having a truck that will get somewhere rapidly is good, especially when I'm running hot to a 10 year-old who's drowning in an estuary 12 miles away. And if the AC is on, which it has been recently for the dog? Make an appointment to get somewhere.

OTOH, it handles ok in the snow and got me up some steep dirt roads last winter. Interior space would be vastly improved if Ford would listen to reason and return to the column shifter rather than the console shift. My siren/light box is barely forward of my gun on my belt, my police radio is behind that, and my lo-band park radio is actually slightly behind me.

All in all, I'd prefer a new Taurus with AWD to the Explorer. Now the 2011 versions might be completely different, this just applies to the 2010 I drive.

Hey it is good to see the Davis County boys on here. I am from Utah and grew up in Bountiful and always loved the way they work. Now that I am a paramedic I wish that more places were LE and paramedic crosstraind. That is a great looking Tahoe and I know for a fact that Davis County Sheriffs department is one of the best in the nation no doubt about it.

So other than fire suppression, what does the fire department in this county actualy do? Seems like the S.O. has everything else covered.

Now, I'm not trying to downplay the role of any of the fire Depts.. We are the smallest county in the state, area wise, but have a very dense population. We have 13 cities with Layton being the largest at 72,000 and the counties population is just shy of 300,000. The deputies respond to medical calls but they are also LEO's with all the reponsibilities of both professions. They earn a premium for doing both but it isn't near what it should be.

According to their website starting for a deputy/medic is $17.35 / hr plus %15 medic differential and you already have to be a medic. I have to be honest, that salary seems low for someone who is just a deputy, let alone a medic and all the other stuff they seem to do there. You guys definitely deserve a nice raise in my opinion. If you're doing both jobs you should get paid like it. Looks like a great department though, wish I was there!

Ok, so let me ask again. What does the fire department do?

What were they created to do? Fight fires!!!

V6? That's your problem right there! Mine's a V8, and it hauls ass! And that's an '04, so it only has the 2V engine, the '06 and up are 3V and have even more power....

In NYS its not legal to take a firearm on an ambulance. I wonder how it works there. if you have a EDP patient it can get very dangerous.

Well, yeah...but the SSV package doesn't come in a V-8 that I know of, so I'm stuck with what they gave me.

Than why is it that every time i take in a MHA on the Amb, The deputy has his firearm on his person still? Not saying you are wrong, But have never heard this before.

EDP pt's around here get the lovely chest strap- (as normal) with the arms strapped as well.. ;)

Officers are exempt from most firearm restrictions. That's why we can carry in a hospital, a school, etc.

This where is should paste my "do one thing and do it really well" pitch. I want medics who are great at medic stuff, and cops who are great at cop stuff. It isn't like there is much skill overlap in both professions.

I understand that resources are spread thin in remote areas, but those two hats don't fit all that well together.

But even after saying that, i think the Border Patrol's BORSTaR program is really cool, from a public service standpoint. But that's still a limited fraction of their manpower.

In the video of the rear, how come the LIN6s are not going?
They're actually white 700 series that VLS pawned off as auxillary reverse lights. I would've done some M6 scene lights or new 12 led Par 36's or the best wouldv'e been the new pioneer pluses. The LIN3's on the push bumper shouldv'e been LINZ6's mounted horizontally. I definitely would've done a Dominator plus on the front of the push instead of the single level 400's. I'm trying to talk them into adding some Sound Off 9 diode mirror lights, a Dual Avenger for the lower windshield, and some more Dual Avengers for the rear side windows. And to top it off, I think some LINZ6's on a license plate bracket would be a great addition.
