Here is a sample of my small collection of apparatus photos. These photos were taken around the Phoenix-Metro area in Arizona. Enjoy...

Good looking vehicles for the most part, I am not a fan of the ambulances. But that is just my opinion. I am very surprised to not see a lot more TOMAR.

I can't remember what it says on the side but the hood says "Learn not to burn."

air conditioning is a must out here. I used to run on an older open cab engine and that was not pleasant during the summer.

That ambulance is not a fair representation of the current fleet. The dedicated EMS ambulances are in much better shape. This particular rig is a refurb with the new(er) paint job for special events. In this case, that flagulance is dedicated to Phoenix International Racetrack (PIR) for their sporting events.

Within the last few years the area departments have been ordering their new apparatus with the more popular whelen LED packages. Any rigs you see older than that, will probably have the phoenix traditional tomor strobe packages.

I'll post more from collection to show some of the older units.

Hello,

Is the aeros on it gear or indepedent rotators? From here the big one look like it's an Aerotwinsonic. I don't see many fire depts with blue lenses. Around here they use all red or red/white/red.

Thanks.

That PT Cruiser is just embarrassing.

What is the Glendale Fire ATV? Is it like a off-road vanbulance?

I couldn't tell you for sure. I can't speak for the northern regions or the Tucson Metro areas, but the Phoenix Metro Area departments run Red/Blue warning systems. Coming from a midwestern state where law enforcement ran red/blue and the fire departments were only red, this threw me off a bit. Having spent a few years here, I like that most emergency vehicles are red/blue.

If you see red/blue in your mirror, pull over. Its that easy. Anything else, use caution.

Or having a SouthWest Ambulance come running up behind you, Siren and all, (and you are looking around for where the siren is coming from as you move right for safety) Then you notice the ALL AMBER lighting :!: :?: :!: coming up in your mirror, and 2 RED box lights  . Very Odd Indeed. As you watch to see what the heck it is passing you for sure, you scratch your head and wonder, AMBER??? WTF??? do I need to pull over for a tow truck or construction vehicle to???

Here are new(er) photos of some Southwest Ambulance apparatus. Yes, they general run a Red/Amber combination to the front. It is weird. A few different stories have been told on why they do this, the most popular is that Red & Yellow are the company colors. Most of the brand new units going in service this year are running all red led warning systems.

I say, any color other than amber or white, pull over - except in alaska, where blue is used in addition to amber where amber is normally used. That way you don't have to take time to think about what state you're in and which vehicles use which color lights.

SAMUR in Madrid runs red and amber. Also, ambulances in Catalonia have begun using red/amber or blue/amber combinations.

I don't have a problem with blue lights on American ambulances or fire trucks as long as the number and intensity of the blue lights isn't greater than that of the red lights, but I think amber lights should ONLY be used when visible to the rear, or on a "less important" vehicle like a firefighter's POV, and when they are mounted on the rear, the number and/or intensity of amber lights should be greater than that of the red lights.

Go back to the 70's-80's LE units in Arizona ran bars that were red on the driver's side, amber on the passenger..
