Deputy Calata succumbed to his wounds today, sustained while serving a felony warrant in Spanaway, WA yesterday. Another member of PCSO SWAT was also shot during the incident, but is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

The subject of the warrant, 40 year old Jeremy Dayton, was shot and killed in the exchange.

Deputy Dominique “Dom” Calata, 35, has served with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department for 6.5 years and is currently assigned to patrol with the Edgewood Police Department. He is a U.S. Army veteran (5 years) and has served in the National Guard for the last 7 years. Deputy Calata has been a member of the SWAT team for 4 years. He is married and has a young son...

Sergeant Rich Scaniffe, 45, is a 21-year veteran of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and is assigned to the Mountain Detachment. He has been a member of the SWAT team for 14 years and has been the team’s commander for 1 year. Sergeant Scaniffe is married and has a young daughter. He is out of surgery and in stable condition.
