This just landed today, I think its all there, plus it came with a second nose cone that is not cracked. The model 66 motor runs fine. Any of you p660 experts feel free to weigh in! Thanks!!
Nice score. It does seem complete. Doesn't seem to have seen much use. I've gotten ones that were so heavily used the stainless wire wore through the shaft and were no longer there.
I believe that C shaped wire connects to the rotator and thus when the rotator spins that causes the shaft the wire is inserted through a gear box that opens and closes the flapper via the pin connected to the gearbox. Here is a schematic of the thing..
As robust as Federal Signal items were in the day it amazes me that they relied on that thin wire for such a vital function. Imagine with the freezing temps in NYC driving around on patrol during freezing rain or a snow storm blowing moisture into the front of the siren. The flapper would freeze in place then you hit the button to wind that bad boy up and twist that wire off. Probably why this type of siren didn't last long on the market.
To determine an "authentic" NYPD 66 Pulsator, the chrome shell is almost always beaten up and dented-due to the billy club (night stick) used by the cops in the radio car banging it thru the open window (in winter) to un-freeze the siren.
Also, although rare-the "P" option was available for a variety of the Federal sirens back then.
Hope all have a peaceful and Merry Christmas.

Found another pic...different vehicle. Previous photo is a mid 60s Oldsmobile (sharp fender ridge...trust me, I know. My dad was an Olds guy!)
Love the custon wheel covers!
