Reno's Twinsonic Resto Thread!

Time again for a vintage lightbar restore! Got two Twinsonics to do, so I'll lump them into the same thread. First one is a standard Twinsonic. Second one is a 12F. Needs probably twice as much work than the first. Needs more too. See if I'll get it for christmas:D

Excuse the unorganized garage, and the blurry photos...

My dad took a pic of the standard 12 back when it was on a car. Dad painted a donated low mileage 77 Thunderbird for the Sheriff's office back in the 90s. I can tell that the bar we have came off the car due to the same mounting feet! Would be cool to find that car...

Code 3 lense adapted to fit the bar. I kinda figure that this bar and the other one had red lenses originally. Josephine County had Code 3 bars on their cars in the early 80's (we have one!).

And I hand buffed one of the siren cones.

That's all for now. Tomorrow I repaint the black base plates and siren speaker tray/mounts, soak the chains in lacquer thinner, wet sand the two red domes I have (going with all red for the time being), take apart the gear cage for cleaning and possible repaint, and finish cleaning the rotator assemblies.

I post so many pics to give you guys an idea of my techniques and to show what the bar was like before the finished product. Might just help someone with their bar in the future:)

Stay tuned!

Hi: why does one siren speaker have a plastic housing and the other doesn't, is that the way it's supposed to be?

This bar was kinda pieced together by the installer so it would be useable on the car it was on. The plastic housing wasn't even bolted to the base like it should be. Pretty sure it should have two plastic housings.

Hi Guys Is there a trick to getting those pain in the butt pins out of the sprocket and mesh gears without damaging the gears. Any help or techniques would be appreciated .

I tried to pop the pins out with some hex keys I had, since I didn't have anything else small enough to push the pins out. I couldn't get them to budge, so I just popped off the lower retaining clips so the shafts and gears dropped down and were loose. Half an hour with lacquer thinner and a brush was enough to clean the grease off the assembly. Little Lithium Grease sprayed on the inner wall of the copper guides (Don't know what they are called exactly, but they guide the rotating shafts through the top and bottom of the gear cage). You can see what I did in the set of photos I am going to post:thumbsup:

Cleaned the rotator parts and gear cage with Lacquer thinner and a brush. Lithium Grease was used where the shafts would be rotating against another metal. Debating on whether I should do the chains or not. The move much free'er now. I tried to get a video of how easy the rotators spin now. When I get this done, I'll have to get a comparison video of this bar next to the one I have yet to restore.

You can see the 4 retaining clips (2 for rotators, 2 for two shafts on gear cage), the two copper guide things(other two are still on the lower halfs), and washers that go under the retaining clips. Never knew the chain was copper, or copper coated, or just copper colored in general:haha:

Put it all back together today, except for the siren speakers. Still have to paint the brackets and dig out another speaker shroud. Also got some siren speaker wire from my dads CHP stash :D

Coming together nicely, Reno. Looks better than it did when you first found it.

Restoring that Visibar you had posted a while back..........well..........that one requires lots and LOTS of patience:hail:  .

Thanks! Gonna redo the redo of my NYPD bar. Found a few tricks this time around that will help me improve the NYPD :D

The Visibar is the one without the domes, correct? Not up to par with twin beacon style bars. The two with domes are with a friend. He wanted to take on the challenge of restoring them:haha:

This , as I mentioned, will take a lot of patience if you decide to take it all apart and clean everything. Removing the drive chain inside, cleaning it up, and then getting it back in is a test of your skills. My Twin Beacon Ray that I got had the chain out already, but it took me over 2 hours to properly drop it in, align on the master and slave beacons' gears, and make sure it was correct tension. If that one of yours runs like a charm, then DON'T take the chain off when you start that project. It'll save a lot of un-needed frustration to get that bugger back in!

good job. the restoration looks like it going real well for you. you're not alone when you mention doing a redo of a previous restoration. i've been there and done that. that's another symptom of the so called "bug".

If you ever decide to put that bar back on a car, I'd recommend getting a Federal PA200 siren. If you hook the PA200 up to both speakers the siren will operate at 200 watts. That'll be plenty loud enough to drive people crazy.

Thanks for the tip. Unless I get a Tbird like the car this bar was on, I don't think it will go on a car. My dad has more PA200s somewhere, I'll reserve one for this bar then. I played around with my TS200 siren speakers, freakin loud, and I don't think the neighbors dogs liked the sound:haha:

If this bar goes into my room, I'll stuff rags in the cones so I can still mess around with them.

Looking good so far, Reno. It's going to take a lot of work, but you're getting there. I would assume you'll use the proper period-correct siren when you get finished: an Interceptor or Director, perhaps!

I remember reading that thread back when I first joined up. What I did was stuff a paper towl down into the center of the cone, then I stuffed a small rag into the outer area inside the cone. Mutes enough sound to where your ear drums aren't blowing out. I pulled out the paper towel to see how much it muted the siren. With it out it was loud enough to still not destroy ear drums, but upset the neighbors dogs.

I have a small variety of period correct sirens to choose from, all the way from the interceptor to a pa2100:D

The PA15A and PA20A will operate at 58 watts with one speaker and 100 watts with two speakers.

I had a PA2100 for a short time. Nice siren. Loaned it to one of my volunteers back then and haven't seen it since. Do you have pix of your CHP Mustang you can post? I loved the small Mustangs, especially the ones adapted for L.E. use.

You would've liked the '76 Dodge van ambulance (new at the time) that I saw near Amarillo years ago. It had a Director inside powered by three PA100 speakers. Was that thing loud!!!!!

Lightbar is still just like it is in the last photos, did nothing else after I lost almost all enthusiasm in lightbars and went away from the site. Maybe I'll buff the lenses and put them on this weekend...

Good to see you're back. Don't loose that spark to restore the bars you got. Look at your NYPD AeroTwin and current TwinSonic projects. They've turned out great and many can learn from your skills:thumbsup:.

Good to see you're back. Don't loose that spark to restore the bars you got. Look at your NYPD AeroTwin and current TwinSonic projects. They've turned out great and many can learn from your skills:thumbsup:.

Haha thanks! :)

I really like that this site has a bunch of good people. Its giving me a little more incentive :D

I've found a few interesting/out of the norm bars that I want to clean up soon:popcorn:

Looks like you're getting there with it. I like the looks of the Crown Victoria in the one picture. What about your other cars?

I'm guessing you mean my 97 in the snow and not the black and whites correct? :haha: Its my daily driver to school. It has gold stripes on one side so people think its an Oregon state trooper car, many kids at school have told me so lol. Bought it for $350 from a small coastal PD, detailed the heck out of it and gave it a full tune up. Its a great car.

I have a couple other crown vics, an 05 CHP, a fully equipped original 00 from the same department as my 97, and a 96 Nevada HP car. My dad has close to 70 CHP cars from 1960-09, and has many more neat police vehicles that are waiting their turn to be restored. I'm gathering up equipment for my dads 97 CHP crown I'm helping restore. Maybe one of these days I'll make a thread for some of our stuff.

Yeah...I like that '97. I have a '97 that's been down for three years because I haven't had the money to get it up and running. It was an ex-S.O. unit, and it still has my ProCopper console between the seat with a lowband two-way, a highband two-way and a PA200. And it has an original Whelen LED DashKing next to the rearview mirror. One of these days, sooner or later, I'll get 'er up and running again. I refuse to junk her out. I'd like to see your Grand Fury and the Mustang. Years ago I worked for the local taxi co. and my assigned unit was an '86 Gran Fury, which I later bought. Later traded it for a Suburban. I liked the Suburban, but now wish I'd kept the little Plymouth! Good goin',Sam.

It's finally done! Still need to get my other siren speaker out the trunk of my car.

Wet sanded the domes with 2k grit paper. Still need to do a little more though. Polished out the stainless too.

Can't wait until I get my own room, then I can mount some of my finished bars like this one up on the wall!

Now to get crackin on my second, rarer one:D

Those Twinsonic lenses are really looking nice. I think you will be really pleased with them after you hit them with some polishing paste.

Thanks!

I used 3M's Perfect-It series #1 compound to buff them out with a machine buffer. They need a little more buffing off the bar (I buffed them on the bar) and need a going over with steps 2 and 3 :)
